Sealing Pinto sump

What's the consensus with the cork sections of a Pinto sump gasket - sealant or no sealant?
Old Gregory's says sealant both sides, while old Haynes manual says use grease?
If sealant, what's best for cork?
Cheers

Dab of silicone sealant in the corners and Permatex liquid sealant sparingly brushed on both sump and block flanges.

    Thanks SFE.
Are you referring to Aviation Permatex No.3 ?

Hi there Noono, I'm at work so I haven't got my bottle at hand. Mine is a small white plastic bottle, red & blue writing by memory. It has a screw on cap with a broad brush attached underneath. Smelly dark brown viscous liquid.

Thanks SFE, yes that's it. Great sealant, but I've only used it on solid mating surfaces, or with paper gaskets.

I used one of the form-a- gasket ones, nice even smear both sides. Mating surfaces need to be really clean and flat, specially the sump which can be a little warped. sump bolts just nipped up, tighten up in a cross pattern to keep pressure even.  Len

Thanks NQRS. I used Permatex No.2 form-a-gasket last time. Worked ok, but a pain to clean the old gasket off sump with all those pressed dimples.
Some people reckon cork gaskets seal better without sealants, but not easy to fix if leaks occur!

    Hi Noono,
True, I was lucky in that I had access to a bead blaster so it was cleaned off while being stripped at the time ready for painting.  Len
