Escort mk2 duratec low HP engines?
Hey there new to here. Recently started one a escort project car. Picked her up just as a rolling body and thought when it gets closer I'll worry about what engine to put in. Now that time is getting closer I've realised how hard it is to find the original engines for them. So a mate suggested going a small duratec, reliable quick and already a few places where you can pick up suited mounts and such. And fuel injection (not my happiest point) Though most of then are high HP regarding the size of the car. 200+ I know 130 is already pretty good for them. Just how much of a over kill are the duratecs and can you find a low HP engine? Thanks a heap Faldfhkhfidhfid

Zetec is probably a slightly easier and cheaper conversion. A little less power than the Duratec too. Just because the engine has a decent amount of power doesn't mean you have to drive it flat out all the time. You'll get used to it and will a nice enjoyable car! I'd rather have more power than needed than less..

I am putting a zetec in my mk2 and chose it over the duratec as already mentioned a bit cheaper and easier. It's a good option and if you want to avoid fuel injection you can set it up on a nice pair of 45 webers and get 150hp or so.

Thanks for the info guys. The reasoning behind liking the duratec was its chain driven opposed to belt and seems easier to get ahold of one. Any other pros and considered between the two. Besides the fact that the zetec is cheaper. And in what ways is the zetec easier.
Also this will be a daily driver and not to fussed on money. Just had some ruels on the build. It had to be a straight 4 and 2 litre and simple clean build. Just the essentials to make a car

From my little bit of research, Duratec's are physically larger than the zetec. Happy to be corrected but due to the extra size a lot of conversions i have seen done require a dry sump to make it all fit. zetec being a bit smaller makes it a bit easier and since its older and is a popular transplant parts/kits are readily available. the downside is most parts are out of the UK and the aussie dollar is making things a bit more expensive. as for sourcing a block, i found my zetec in about a week at a wreckers for $700. Engine was easy to find, the Type 9 5 speed i plan to connect it to is proving more of a challenge to locate.

Pretty sure the zetec uses a iron block as well. Thanks for the info about the size difference. The zetec seems more at home then the duratec looking at a few that have been done

I've installed 4x zetecs into escort mk1 and mk2 and about to do another over the summer. When you buy the zetec get a 2ltr (obviously) and best to get a manual as a start . Good luck with your project. Cheers

Don't forget the RX8 box conversion many in the UK are currently doing. I nice 2ltr zetec with that BDA rocker cover and a 6 speed box would be mint!!
