whos built a turbo pinto... need your brain!

Want to build a reliable turbo pinto engine, thinking running around 6-12psi, and making my own injection manifold.... what do i need to do to the engine for this to happen? Whos made there own injection kit?

About 10~15k to do it properly. Firstly, a good engine biulder & a good block. Forged pistons, Carrillo rods, stainless valves, turbo cam & headwork, Garrett T28 turbo, custom intake manifold, rail & injectors, computer & wiring, custom turbo manifold, custom exhaust, a good radiator & intercooler, plumbing.

Then upgraded driveline. Shortened R31 diff, supra box, custom tailshaft, BIG brakes, etc etc.
    Tuning & dyno time. Engineering?

I have read from other members here that by the time a project like this is done right, it would have been the same cost as dropping in a well built Sierra cosworth engine.

I did this in 1985 to my RS2000. Very successful and a lot of fun.
Highly suggest to simply buy a late model 6 cylinder factory turbo Falcon.
    Everything is already there.
    No pain and suffering.
    And a better car.

Agree with Peter, This is why SR20 swaps are popular, bang for buck.

Putting a Nissan motor in a classic Ford is not a decision to be made lightly.

Why not keep the Ford a Ford and buy a 180SX with the SR already in it? It would probably work out cheaper :D

turbo pintos arent that hard to do,
mine has made decent power for not much money, in fact ive spent around $2500
using a carb, but to be honest injection would be ideal. im interested to see what you come up with on the injection manifold side.

This is a piccie of my setup.
I originally turbocharged the car in 1985.
Took it off the road in very early 1990 to rebuild the engine (chasing more horsepower) and programmable fuel injection.
The car remained in many pieces until 3 years ago when I got fed up seeing it in bits.
Got everything completed except for the inlet manifold, then life side tracked me once again.

I've run a few turbo/supercharged pintos now. Reliable really depends on how greedy you get as it is all too easy to turn up the wick. Carb draw thru is very simple, both cost and setup, however you are limited with boost due to lack of intercooler. I injection isnt too hard, however proper setup and tuning will add up. As for injection manifolds there are a few options. One is, standard inlet manifold with falcon ea throttle body (fits with slotted mounting holes) standard sierra/Granada injection manifold, cut down falcon or Saab inlets, or full custom. I can provide pics of all the above tomorrow from the home computer if you are interested.
As for bottom end, you have heaps of options. Again depends on what boost, fuel, and management you are using.

Standard manifold with Falcon CPI ea throttle body.

    See here -http://www.retrotech.co.nz/Tech/throttle-body-injection.php
Simon ran a couple of adaptor plates however it is just as easy (and cheaper) to slot the throttle body base. It then fits straight on.

The throttle body and fitment is cheap. Easy to grab an elec fuel pump, run lines and surge tank.  The expensive part comes when you want to control it (ECU) depending on what you get this will cost more than the rest put together, and then there is the cost of setting it up on the dyno.  MegaSquirt is probably your best budget option. Still it can be done cheap. My first injected pinto used a screwdriver adjustable Microtech D4 !!!!

Other options are the Sierra/Granada injection manifold and ecu.

Getting harder to find now, but usually between $500-1000 for manifold/ecu/loom/dizzy.  Will bolt straight up and run, can be made to handle 'some' boost with a few tweeks. Probable most cost effective in the long run as you dont need dyno tuning to get you up and running.

Adapted inlet from another make.  I have seen volvo, saab, telstra and falcon all with varying degrees of sucess. Need to be handy with fabrication and will still need dyno setup and (mostly) custom ecu to work.

Or you can go full custom.  i ordered all these parts via ebay for less than the price of a bare sierra manifold.  Again, you will need to factor loom sensors ecu and dyno time.
