I think you need to have the valve seats hardened, The pinto motors are designed to run on leaded fuel, lead being the softener when coated over the valve seats.

You will need to have hardened valve seats inserted in the head for the exhaust valves. Have a ring around before you settle on a place as the prices, (and method) will vary.

Try to get a head off a Sierra injected engine. They have hardened valve seats and the inlet tracts are better shaped than the earlier Pinto head.

Ford Telsta/mazda FE valves are 44mm(dia) x 112(length) x 8(stem) They are/were a cheap upgrade instead of buying the grp1 gpr2 stainless valves. (When they used to cost an arm and a leg) Prices are much cheaper now so unless you are building to a student budget you're better off just getting some new, stainless and decent. (around $30 a valve) The valves themselves will not solve the problem, you still need to fix the seats. Shaun

For the valves, try Woz, I think you'll struggle to do any better... 'The valves are off the shelf stainless items, 45mm and 38.3mm with wasted stems. They are from a company I deal with through work, I can supply them for $28 each+ freight,
Cheers Woz'Have a look at the post just bellow 'Pinto build 2' http://classic-ford.org/forum/post.asp?method=Reply&TOPIC_ID=21044&FORUM_ID=7As for the heads, the most common method is to machine the exhaust seats, and interference fit a hardened seat. They then recut the valve seat. Just google unleaded seat conversion, theres plenty of info. Shaun
