Old Engine

My brother has just given me this engine: (still in his car, he wants the shell)

it has been sitting for about 10 years, still can turn it by hand.  ive cleaned it up a fair bit changed the oil and filters.  Also taken the carbies and manifold of to make sure theres nothing in there and cleaned them up.
i put a little bit of oil in the cylinders the other day and cranked it over with the starter with out the plugs in and it seems alright.
when i had a look in the first cylinder theres a bit of build up on top of the piston, any way i can easily get this out without taking the head off?
is there anything else i should do before i try and start it?
also need a car to put it in if anyones selling one.
cheers,
Stewart
