Why would 10% ethanol be responsible for blowing a head gasket??

I have read many stories of petrol station ethanol blends not having the quoted octane rating.  There are Australian rules relating to what they can and cannot do but I cannot recall them.

Are you aware the two fuels have different specific gravities/densities? In other words did you check AF ratios with a lambda on a dyno first? The simply using united on a car tuned for bp98 will run leaner perhaps causing detonation. It's not just a matter of higher octane and wind up the timing? I ask because I've also been interested in running this fuel but fuels are often misunderstood or misused giving them a bad rep.

I have been using United 100 for about 4 years in my MK1 1600 (built to formula ford specs) and have not had the slightest bit of trouble. First tried it when I could not stop pre ignition even with BP Ultimate. Car runs nice, starts easy, does every thing right. Went back to BP, and other fuels when on trips and I can notice the difference and the pinging. Would recommend it to any one.

I going to start using JPF100 in my rally car.  More consistent blend than United but same thing.
