Thinking about going PINTO.
I have a nice little HC xflow ready to go in my MK1 2 door but just found a cheap pinto long motor. I'm only tempted because I recently picked up some capri struts... the extra weight will be okay with these. The motor will need a total strip down and rebuild. I would like to leave this to a pro, can anyone recommend a SE qlder who could rebuild the motor with FR32 cam and stage 1 headwork? I'd like to keep the 32/36 and aim for about 130hp (can you tell I've been reading burtonpower.com LOL) It will be for street use so mild and torquey is the go. Some ball park figures on price from any forum members would be helpful thanks.

Thanks. Last night I had a look at the 'ford escort down under book' and the specs between the 2 motors I have are unusual. HC 1600 is 75kW @ 6000 rpm and 101lb/ft @ 4000 rpm. 2L Pinto is 70kW @5200 rpm and 148Nm (109.2 lb/ft) @ 3800 rpm. So not really worth putting a 'standard' pinto in there ay.

unusual there is a low comp 2l and hi comp 2l, you would think the 2l would have more power than a 1600

Also depends on pre or post ADR27a too. Pre ADR27a 1.3 was 68hp whereas 1.6 post ADR27a was only 65hp... depending upon what literature you read it from of course. 2lt was only available post ADR27a and was quoted at 72kw for the HC version or about 93hp in the old money. Forget all the specs though, the extra torque from the 2lt will make a stock 2lt even a substantial improvement over almost any 1.6. Only ever has a Kent engine as a 1.3 auto in an early mk2 escort and I got the same fuel economy as a 2lt manual - but was a laugh trying to keep it up with traffic - WOT all the way .... :) Cannot buy LC 2lt pistons anymore (have not Ben able to except customs for years) so virtually all are now HC these days.
Just my 2.2c worth including GST....

I've only ever seen the 2.0HC Au spec engine quoted as 70KW, which equals 94hp. I'd take more torque over more power any day.

The Pinto offers 8 lb/ft more torque, but weighs an extra 30kg.

really if you had the 1600 ready to go in, you might as well throw it in then put the 2l on an engine stand, depending on what you wanted to do with it , i would rather spend money on a 2l than a 1600, also there was a thread on turbosport that showed they almost weighed the same, where did you get the weight from? and those figures quoted seem a bit odd, for a std engine with std exhaust of that era to be making max power at 6000rpm seems high in the rev range , i would expect that from a mild engine

I took out a 1600 and put in a 2l admittedly the 1600 was not running properly ,suspected valve trouble, but whne the revs were up it was fairly nippy but, with the 2l in the car it is completely different to drive much more fun

Hi Jonesy I think that's def the go too. As a matter of fact the car is now in situ for engine removal and refit! (finally cleared enough space in shed) Undoubtedly the 2L has way more potential and would be the pick of the two when it comes to spending money. I'm looking fwd to seeing how this HC compares to the LC bottom end that's currently in the car. It should be 30% more power which is heaps... but when that 2L finally ends up in my shed i'm sure it will only be a matter of time before it's sending grunt to my back wheels

Where does the figure of 74kW for an HC 1600 Kent engine come from? I don't remember ever seeing the Kent engine listed with power that high; even the Au spec pre-ADR 27As Ghia's (with twin-choke Weber carb) were lower than the standard 70kW of a Pinto if I remember correctly. Edit: Doh! I see it is from the book you quoted. Frankly, I suspect it is wrong (although I wish it were right seeing the Kent is supposed to be lighter).

I have heard a couple of people doubt those figures. But it was a dirty motor, and as previously stated by na.charrett the dirty 1.3 had more stick than the clean 1.6 so who knows. My HC has a 234 grind so hopefully it will be close to 100hp @ crank.

The 1600 HC motor in the early Ghias had a decent spec for the day, with it's twin-choke Weber and tubular exhaust (I think). ADR27A regs killed it though, dropping the power down to 46kW, hence Ford eventually putting the Pinto in. If your are starting with the "good" 1.6 motor, and camming it etc, it should be a nice little runner indeed.
