Best bet there, get one with a larger output  than a standard unit to cope with any modifications you may want to do in the future.
Look at exchange units, might even be a little cheaper

I bought a new alternator but it was a different style to the original one so I removed it with intentions to keep it as original looking as possible. That's why I'm wanting to rebuild my current one. I have no intentions on any modifications other then a radio and 2 speakers.

Getting your one rewound could be costly but if you ring around theres bound to be an auto elec who does reco units that match. If you cant find an exact match you`ll find one bloody close, theres plenty of big auto elecs here in adelaide

Some models of the MK1 Escorts came out with a radio with a single speaker. The Little Ripper van came out with a 8-track with 2 speakers. My van never came out with a radio but I managed to find the exact same Ford 8-track the Little Rippers had and have plans to install it. The rear of my van has fibreglass side shelving with a speaker on each side which I plan on putting back in. I know I'm wanting to make my van as original as possible but I also have plans to go camping and be able to sleep in the back and listen to music as I drive.

It wont be easy to find 8 track tapes but it will be a bloody great thing to have set up in your wan mate. Use the glove box (if it has one ) to hide a modern stereo

You would be surprised the old classic rock stuff that is out there on 8 track, there is a lot of bad stuff as well. If you do put the 8 track in and get tapes it may be as well to find an old service person to give it a clean as they will chew the tapes if dirty
