Rhys' MK2 Escort Track Car

Thought it might be time to start a build thread on one of my Mk2s.

I bought this after the realisation I really don't want to hack up or crash my blue Escort by tracking it. I'd just finished modifying the front lower radiator section of my Blue Escort to take an intercooler without taking away from the factory looks when I realised that because I don't want to modify it to a point where I cannot convert back to road rego. For me it was always going to be a compromise so I decided to buy something dedicated for track work only, so I bought this a few months ago..  and have since sold my Green Mk2 to make way for it

Don't have a lot of history on it but it’s got some basic goodies on it to keep me happy. Cage, Shorted Falcon Diff, Coils Overs, Upgraded brakes, Hydro Handbrake, Fuel Cell etc..Seems like it’s been a budget racer/hillclimber.

It came to me as a non-runner as the twin carbs had been removed. When I got it home I fitted a stock manifold and it fired up no worries.

It’s pretty rough around the edges but overall the shell is not too bad. Bit of rust in the rear of the roof which I have cut out and welded a new section in. I’m in the process of tidying up the bodywork and repainting it white at the moment.

Mechanically, I will run the BVH from my Blue Escort on a standard bottom end with a decompression plate and a T25/28 ebay special turbo and a custom injection setup using the ECU from my Blue Escort (hoping to swap ECU in and out of both cars, using two looms). It's all going to be a fairly budget built motor for the time being but that’s mainly because I just want to get it out and have some fun in it. Future engine direction could easily change as I have no rego commitments to meet.

I will soon be looking at options for 5stud front hubs to match the rear as it’s currently got the Volvo brake swap on front with unknown 4 stud hubs.

I’d like to have it going next year to do a couple of practice days in with a view of joining a club associated with MSCA in SA to start doing Super Sprints.

I’ll update with pics as it progresses.

looking good mate, these pics show how much it has changed,
is the turbo you mentioned the same one you were using before or have you changed your mind?

That's an excellent project. Keep the updates coming.
I like those little arches on the front, they look very cool.

Nice work Rhys! It might be a lot more work but prep and paint inside and out.

Thanks for the comments guys and help on front hubs, once the shells finished I'll get stuck into mechanicals and working out exactly what they are.
I've now painted the shell and all hanging panels, just need to flat them back and buff everything up. Then do all the blackouts around windows.
Hopefully I can get a new pic or two over the weekend.

sundowner, yes same turbo that I was going to install on my Blue Escort.
nathan, the cabin is black which I'll continue with for simplicity but will paint out engine bay at some point when I have the engine removed, although it looks bad in the pics, once I'd cleaned it up it was probably the best paintwork on the car.
Mish, I've painted it white to keep it looking clean and make any repairs easier.

    Cheers,
    Rhys

It's all painted now bar the engine bay.
Couple of pics, bit hard to get anything decent where its sitting. Will update once panels are on.
