Fitting Celica 5speed into manual tunnel Mk2 Escort -what mods req'd?
G'Day, I'm having difficulty fitting my motor and box into one of my Escorts. Its a manual shell and engine also has high energy sump to make clearance that bit smaller. What is required as far as tunnel mods? It looks like I'd have to cut out the standard gearbox mounts/bracing in tunnel to make it big enough for new box? Thanks, Rhys

I am doing the same conversion currently but to an auto shell. I'm interested to see how you go. Cheers Matt

Here is what i cut out to fit my Celica Box. I ended up cutting both sides away and welding new metal in further out to make the tunnel wider and raise up where the stick comes thru to reduce that dredded engine tilt. Gearbox mounts are wrong to so look at that while ur converting

Neat solution as always Marty. Rhys, use the speedo adapter from a RT104 Corona so it adds a right angle to avoid crimping the cable as it's very tight in the tunnel. Matt

Thanks for the replies. Looking at my car I'm going to go with Martys idea. The top of my tunnel has already been hacked for an earlier rocket box gearhole and the bracing around tunnel between the seat mounts is also butchered. So I think I'll cut out mounts as per Martys pics, put gearbox back in and see where it is in relation to already hacked inner tunnel and where g/stick comes out as I have two options here. Then once decided I'm thinking I'll cut rest of tunnel away in between seat rails and re-brace/box it to give some strength back if space permits. The grinder and welder will be my friend during this one. As far as speedo goes I appreciate the tip but I wrecked the cable pulling it out and doubt I'll need it as it will never be road registered. Thanks,

Invest in a quick shift while you're at it. I got mine many years ago from a guy racing in nz. I think he now sells on eBay? Makes a good gearbox brilliant.

While we're talking Toyota gearboxes, this is one I've got in the shed. Came with the orange mk1 I got ages ago and the guy said it was a Celica 5-sp. From looking at the interwebs it looks like a W58 Supra one, not a Celica. Any ideas? Its a bulky thing, surely no chance of fitting in a manual tunnel.

I'm not that knowledged up on these 'boxes but you may need a auto tunnel from a F650 truck for that one lol. Shaun. . Quickshift... I'll be looking them up thanks for the heads up☺ Matt , that's a brilliant idea to swing the cable clear With the gearbox mounts i moved them back about 4in and trimmed them to fit without fouling. Fitting the zetec and Celica Box was such a tight fit even though I cut the bulkhead back a inch , i have a wcxm and a home fab winged sump. If it can be helped install the box with motor but not the head as it reduces angle sliding the engine/box in. Here's a underside pic of my van Martin

Thanks guys, I'll get myself a quickshift. Marty did you add any extra strengthening or bracing other than welding old mounts back on? Thanks

I took away the ribbing or cut a line thru the middle then hammer it flat and Weld it back together stops it getting in the way which i do with Type9 swaps . Cause i had to replace both floors ,inner and outer sills, seat rib boxes and most of the tunnel due to rust , i replaced most metal with thicker plate where required .
Thanks

Well this has turned out to be a bigger job than expected. Engine and box has been in and out about 6 or 7 times so far with alot of tunnel cutting and beating. I've 'massaged' one last time and will try to fit it all up and if it doesn't go this time I'll be looking to cut the entire gearbox tunnel out from engine bay back and weld in a bigger custom fabbed one (any suppliers in AU?) My issue is I'm also running a HE sump which is getting hung up on steering rack mounts on x-member. I know I could drop X-member and it would probably all work, but I want it to be a proper fix where engine and box can go in and out easily. Rhys

I managed to fit the Celica steel case in my manual shell with a little massaging but I have it on the Zetec which is sitting VERY low in the car (just enough for sump to clear rack) hence it may be giving me more room around the bellhousing.
