Any ideas on running gear for my mk2
Hi All Now my mk1s done its time to start looking at my mk2. I have an idea that id like to get a salvage car and transplant parts over into the escort. I want decent power (turbo would be nice) but would like a standard-ish set up to ensure reliability. I can machine, weld etc so not scared easily! Im thinking duratech, or ideally new eco-boost (cant seem to find much info on them though), or maybe mx5, or mazda setup? Any ideas on good donors for me to consider, or do you know of any good sites for this kind of info.

What type of car will it be? Road registered or track?

Then if you want a turbo the Nissan engines would be the best bet. CA18t or SR20t. Easily available, tough engines, BIG potential, heaps of aftermarket etc, fit easily enough and reliable.
Front wheel drive engines like duratecs, zetecs, need more work to go in like sump mods etc Particularly the duratec.
Or.. for something different you could go the Honda F20C (s2000) like im doing to my Mk1. Although it is a little tricky because it is such a tall engine. So the sump is the main issue.

Definately something like a Sr20det front cut or engine, gearbox and ecu combination. As mentioned relatively easy fitment and great aftermarket support. i started adding up receipts on my turbo pinto the other day and stopped when I realised I could have had 2 sr's and I still hadn't finished counting.

Cheers guys keep them ideas coming, dont know much of the nissans how old is the youngest of these? dont really want to buy an old thrash box and spend rebuilding it, would rather sink cash into newer motor etc. Like the ideas though, evo , like the sound of the honda do you have a thread on your build?. I believe the new focus xrs are 4 cylinder ecoboost, any one know much on these?

i'm sure the ecoboost is a next gen version of Duratec being turbo and all. A friend of mine is doing a Duratec turbo in his mk1 Escort, he realised the MZR is not the easiest way as the head has no aftermarket manifolds etc...kind of $5000 in the bin ! He went and bought a 2.0 Duratec {$600}and opened it up to change rods , pistons , he found a Ranger crank, cnc head from usa, all the delete bits, ally flywheel and Spec stage 5 clutch, a Cosworth carbon intake manifold, bellhousing to suit a T56 ..so far he's at $3500 odd and way better off than a MZR motor ! still he's to find a turbo and ecu but these arent expensive nowadays

I wouldn't worry about the age of the Nissan motors. SR20's were still being used right up until the latest S15 Silvias and are built as tough as nails. Being naturally a north/south engine & gearbox (like an escort) theres going to much less things to change. The new Ford motors are all front wheel drive i.e. east/west orientation so you need to then change them to north/south to suit escort, with gearbox/bellhousing/sump/water rail/exhaust and inlet changes.. the list goes on. As above the MZR is a bit of a waste of time, not too much you can do with them. And using a Duratec is quiet a bit of work to get in (although quiet a good engine in NA form). And if your wanting more power ie: turbo you going to have to rebuild it all anyway really. Its definitely doable, but we're talking major work and cost (don't forget engineering to be road legal!). F20c, the one main problem is the engine block height, and requiring sump clearance over the crossmember. Something im going through at the moment. So either dry sump or modified sump/crossmember (hoping for the later). Heres a thread to possibly the nicest nissan engine build ive seen (although used the older FJ motor - but could easily be a SR20t).. http://www.classic-ford.org/cfp/tm.aspx?m=17599 My build thread.. still early days really.. http://www.classic-ford.org/cfp/tm.aspx?m=54511
