Lowering Mk2 RS

Hi,

Currently lowering my RS2000 coupe. Done the rear end with no probs but having removed the front struts and old springs I can't see how my shorter springs are gonna work. The strut merely extends to full length and i'm left with no tension on the spring. 2" shorter.

Can someone shed some light on what i'm missing?

    Silly question, but just so i'm not getting confused. Have you dropped the car down so theres the full weight on to the springs? Sometimes its handy to cable tie the spring to the spring seat so it doesn't go out of alignment when dropping it back down.
    Is this what your asking?

    All good. I just assumed there would be some tension before install on the car. Dropped it down and the weight has taken up the slack.

    Please be aware that your springs must ALWAYS be retained by the strut ie the spring cannot be allowed to fall out of the strut top/bottom spring mount even when there is no weight on them.
     
    If you jack your car up or put it on a hoist and the springs fall out of position then it shouldnt pass rego and can be defected.
     
    This is something the RTA/mechanics check because it is dangerous if the spring falls out while driving.
     
    For example if you are travelling at speed and go over a bump/crest and the weight of the car is taken off the springs and they fall out then you can guess what happens next.
     
    Lowered springs may require a shock insert with less travel to prevent loosing a spring at the wrong time.
