Just to clear this one up (for myself )... Throttle bodies are different to bike carbs - Bike carbs use jetting and a choke just like a carb would, whereas TBs feature injectors and are controlled by an ECU.

I read somewhere that you can effectively scrap bike carbs and make TBs out of them. Is this the usual way of going about things? Or is it better to look for a true TB (from newer bikes maybe?)
Do T/Bs have any drawbacks compared to a 'standard' type EFI system with an intake manifold?

Cheers

Nick

Nick you're on the ball with your first sentence.
I wouldn't bother to try and make something out of bike carbs when bike throttle bodies can be had so cheap.

The only thing I consider a drawback is quad throttle bodies are harder to box up/seal for turbo application than a single throttle bodied inlet setup.

Cheers,
Rhys

If after market ECU's can be programed for any kind of TB's, can you not reprogram the factory focas ECU to run TB's on a Zetec?. Just curious, I dont know a lot about ECU's,so if thats a stupid question you can probibibly tell.

Having done the Bike Carb conversion I can highly recommend it.

You are right 2lt_Scort about the price of the Bike ITB's being cheaper than the carbs but then you have the added cost of an ECU so this basically will double the price of the conversion.

the problem with modern factory ecus's is they often have everything running through them. Most run run a CAN bus linking to several other minor ecu's like a Body control module,   monitoring all sorts of things like  headlight delays, interior lights, alarms, airbags, ABS etc etc. To run a modern factory ecu with an engine swap you either need to be able to disable all these extras in the programming or fool the ecu that everything is still working as per the donor car.  For an engine swap,  fuel only or fuel & spark are probably all thats required making an aftermarket ecu a better option. If your changing to quad TB's you also need to consider running ALPHA-N rather than the MAP (Manifold pressure) or MAF ( Air flow) which is used with a single TB. The online megasquirt manuals make a good read if you have plenty of spare time.

Yeah factory ECUs run a plethora of things, and I really doubt that you can easily interface with them and set your own fuel maps...

Im tending towards TBs because I wouldnt mind getting stuck into EFI tuning and the likes - from what I understand you've got ultimate control over fueling.

Here's a site that explains alpha-n:

thanks for the tip!

Even a v8 supercar engine doesn't do full "alpha-n". Normally at worst you just do idle. Alpha-n is not needed with most current ecu's. Most problem are due to **** itbs or synchronisation

If you care about correct fuelling and timing at every load and rpm point without compromising, on any NA itb engine, it has to be TPS as main load. It has nothing to do with how modern or good your ecu is.
a bit of discussion in this thread http://www.classic-ford.org/cfp/tm.aspx?m=54621&high=throttle+bodies

for your tb's there are plenty of aftermarket ones around. for bike tb's look at something like the gsxr600 range. they have a 38mm throat which is pefect for a pinto, not sure about a zetec. and can be individual seperated making for easy manifiold manufacture. http://www.msextra.com/fo...ic.php?f=94&t=6602 has some specs on various bike carbs. Depending how south you are you may need something with an idle control if its a road car.
