Want to buy a RS2000 do you buy a 4door or a 2door

RS2000 do you buy a 4door or a 2door?
4 door easier to get a good one 2 door harder to get?
( the red 4 door looks ok on ebay or wait for a good 2 door)

I dont think Id wait to find a preference. Id grab the first decent one that comes along. If you find a better one later or change your mind on 2door-4door you can always sell it and buy again, but nothing stings worse than the regret of having let a car go and wishing you didnt. There are more 4 door door trims out there but none are decent or the right colour or without speaker holes cut in them. You can buy brand new 2 door RS trims though.  I reckon 4 doors may become more collectible one day anyway because of the demand for 2 doors. The 4 doors may slip into obscurity and left to rot /stripped for parts due to their lesser demand and as such there may be a lot less of them in the future.......just my thoughts.....

There were less four doors made, variously reported as somewhere around 800 in total. They were Aus market only too so could possibly be the rarest form of MK2 RS2000s built globally

I got a 2 door just over a year ago. the body needs a bit of work (rust in usual places) but its registered (goes like the clappas as well) and I drive it once a month or so when I'm in town. it still turns heads everywhere! and to be honest in my opinion in the long term the 2 doors will become worth more as they are the ones that are sought after. but in all seriousness, if you aren't bothered 2 doors or 4... then just buy one you like and is in good condition!

If that was the silver 2DR then i bought it $4550 ,

the 2dr mk2 RS was from what i am aware of was fords original intention to introduce affordable club rallying to the masses in the UK  , so from a purest point of view more desireable to own now ?
    thats my personal opinion

there has always been this belief that because england only made 2 door RS2000's that our 4 door wasnt a "real" RS. Maybe that belief has played some part in 2 doors being more sought after . Who knows?  I think thats just people with 2 doors trying to fool themselves into thinking their car is a bit better than a 4 door. As another member said, there were less 4 doors made than 2 doors, so the question of rare/desirability I think is answered in that one fact. Anyways, there is a maybe-seller on this forum in nowra with a yellow 2 door in good original condition. Might be worth a look

If you're not overly fussed, do you have kids or intend to?  If so, the 4 door will win on practicality and the windows in the back of a 2 door don't wind down.  I have a 4 door, but if I didn't have kids I would have waited for a 2 door.

Throughout the late seventies & most of the eighties I thought along the lines of 2 door for racing, 4 door for wannabe commuters.

That was until I met Cortney in 1987, a slightly sullied 1980 4 door in factory original RS2000 only Midnight (for the uninitiated - black at night, blue in shaded sunlight, deep purple in direct sunlight). In my eyes she was simply sex on wheels. Over the next three years I pestered her second owner to sell her to me, crying tears of blood as her condition rapidly deteriorated.  Xmas 1989 he did the unthinkable - traded her in on a FWD white TX3. I near on laid rubber in my fire breathing (literally) 1310 weber fed Mini all the way to the dealer, finding her languishing on the back lot awaiting her fate. I sent the (un)suitably attired girlfriend into the office to enquire - with the sales team duly distracted and a four page list of faults I managed to hammer out a sweet deal and driver her away. 23 years later, still have Cortney in the garage, and the girlfriend has been my wife for 22 years and counting.

Moral of the story: there is no such thing as buying the 'wrong' RS2000 - go looking at both 2 & 4 doors, any colour, any condition - you may be surprised at what you drive home in.

And as to the debate if an Aussie RS2000 'real' RS - Ford saw fit to give them their own model number, 11918 for the 2 door and 11938 for the 4 door - can't get more real than that....

If it were my money, i'd buy kierans 75 2 door over any aussie RS. Only RS models here worth buying are the 25 German ones imported in 75/76.

2c worth of opinion well spent.

I have had a number of MKII RS2000's as first cars (3 in total) and I sold two of them (2 door & a 4 Door) for only a few grand about 9 years ago.

I very much regret doing so everyday.

As suggested go look at everything available and you'll soon make your mind up when you find the right car for you whether it be a 4 door of 2.

    Cheers,

As an owner on 9 (yes 9 !) /mk2 Escorts currently, my current tally is six 2 doors and  three four doors...  Two of the 4 doors are the rare Midnight Blue factory colour too (One for sale too).
Two doors for racing are much more sought after (mostly flat fronts, but some like the RS front too) and that is one reason 2 door shells is Aus have skyrocketed  in the last 5 years.  My two doors are mostly well modified (race/rally/autocross and motorkhana), but the 4 doors are substantially cheaper. hence why my four door RS was originally bought.  It was used on the road for over 10 years by me - only coming off general road duties 2 years ago - its mods were limited to LPG and a 5 speed to suit its purpose at the time.

Ultimately it will come down to YOUR preference as I actually prefer 4 doors for the simple reason that it is easier to reach the seatbelt.... (first 2 escorts i looked at back in 88 were a tow and a four door and that is where my preference came from at the time.) But 2 door are easier getting into with a full cage...

A major factor now will be condition - remember the youngest Mk2 is now around 32yo (excluding the RACV vans) - so condition and availability of parts/panels is now an issue....   Having both I can tell you it is much easier AND cheaper finding four door parts than two door parts.....  I have 2 sets of good 4 door trims, but getting a 1/2 decent set of 2 door ones (yes you can buy them repro - but at $880 pair...) and I have been trying to collect a decent pair of 2 door trims for few years now...

Prices - For a reasonable condition four door you will pay around 20-30% less.  My 4 door for sale is asking $4.5K and is mechanically strong, but bodywise is going to need a tidyup, but if it were a 2 door I would be chasing $6K for it.   GDub recently sold his EC 4 door for around $10K, but around 6 years ago got $13K for an EC Monza Red 2 door.   Do you want it to drive or for collecting or as an investment.  One of my 2 doors I am keeping as a "spare complete" shell, but if I got offered the right money then it would go now as I figure that the demand for clean rust free shells is only going to go up over time as they become harder to find in GC.

Collectability - RS2000's are always going to be more costly than flat fronts and therefor more likely to be more pampered.  Looking at Small Ford Sunday over the last few years has seen a substantial relative increase of pampered 4 door RS's, but the 2 doors still outnumber the 4 doors easily.  Colour is a factor and most RS's seem to be Monza Red (also my choice of colour), but second most common are PinenLime and White.  Only once have I seen at SFS another Midnight Blue RS (4 or 2 door), and silver and black are very (very!) rare.  In my 15 years of having my midnight blue RS I have only ever seen two other 4 doors and a single 2 door on the road in that colour.  (I have heard of another couple being restored in the 2 clubs I am in).  What was scrapped only a few years ago, would have been worth $$$ in a few years.  Look at England - they all want 2 doors, but some magazine feature cars are being built on 4 doors now as the 2 door prices are very very high and dragging up the 4 door prices too.

Ultimately it will come down to
    • Condition, condition, condition (as they say in real estate...)
    • Price
    • Collectability
    • Modifications (over the top / non period type modifications do hurt a cars value and this factor is now coming into play and will become more so as time goes on
    • Why you want it / What you are going to use it for............

Talking about Aussie cars here of course... The 25 Mk1 RS2000's an 25 Mk2 Rs2000's imported for racing homologation in 74 and 74 are worth considerably (magnitudes!) more than any Aussie RS and always will be unless the UK/German one has been totally butchered....

Oh - my pick is that in a few years time the Poms will start hunting out the Aussie 4door RS2000's as they were not available outside Aus and Nz... That may push prices / demand of 4 door RS's in the future...
