The rocker cover looks similar to mine only the filler is at the back. I believe Burtons used to sell them with matching 3 piece filler cap. I will post a pic later

Just found this thread.

Guaranteed you will love the performance the turbo engine will provide when developed.
But probably you will find the development will never end because there will always be new ideas to try.

I turboed my RS2000 in 1985 (still got it).
The type of power and torque the engine gave was unbelievable. Yet around town even with the big engine was still much easier to drive than the standard car. And it was always fun to torment mates who had the 308 and 351 cars.

Congratulations on all the work.
Like you just love my Escort panel van after all these years too.

cheers Peter

yeah ive always wanted a turbo pinto in my van.
and even at the early development stages and on low boost (7psi) its suprised a few people, even a mate with sorted 5 litre in a 56 f100 claiming it will kill his truck.

the fun part i think will be trying new things and developing at as i learn more.

any pics of your setup?
im guessing back then it was a draw through?

Hi Glenn,
Back in the mid '80's the choices were draw through or blow through. EFI was just a dream and well out of reach.
My system was draw through twin Weber, Switzer split pulse turbo, nicely ported head, standard valves/springs, billet "turbo" cam from Mr Bob Holden, 7.6:1 comp, standard RS gearbox, shortened BW Falcon rear end with 2.92:1 diff. As part of the ongoing development I took it off the road in early 1990 to find a few more horsepower and more torque (it becomes an addiction, so be ware....) including programmable EFI. I got most of it back together during a burst in 2011, without inlet manifold and designing a 5 link rear end, and added a plate type LSD. Been too busy since.

Will find some piccies for you.

Just surprised myself. Found the photos!

The photo from the front of the car is from around 1986 or 1987. Car was running at the time.
The second photo taken in 2011 during the reassembly is as it still stands today.
Exhaust manifold, turbo exhaust housing and exhaust pipe from turbo to under drivers floor has been ceramic coated.
Waiting for a nice inlet manifold with injectors to be made.....

looks great peter, and serious to, external gate ect...
are you not intercooling it? you have so much room inside the nose cone to do so as well.
would love to hear more about this build

no plan to intercool it.

It is (was/hopefully again will be some day) a street car that must accelerate from manifold vacuum (no boost) to high boost in a split second when needed. Intercoolers and the plumbing add a lot of air volume and air flow restrictions that must be compressed between the turbo compressor and the inlet valve, which takes time to achieve boost. This means the turbo must work harder to get the same result. With the intercooler the intake charge is cooled which is an advantage, but my car is not a race car and is not on boost all the time. My system had the shortest possible exhaust runners (as seen in the photo) and a smallish inlet manifold so the amount of volume the turbo had to compress was minimal. There was no "lag" which was astonishing considering the size of the turbo, but the advantage was the split pulse design, again to keep volumes minimal. The turbo/engine combination sensed when you wanted more power and the power just came on very rapidly but very smoothly without effort until the rev limiter and wastegate did their job.

The thinking is that if there are two identical cars with identical engines, and one has an intercooler, if there is a race from standing start my system would accelerate faster than the car with the intercooler, even though the intercooled car would produce more horsepower. My car would just launch without undue revs, noise or hard work and be several car lengths ahead and be difficult/impossible to pull in over a short distance.

With the draw through system the fuel helped cool the intake charge and also I was using water injection which made an amazing difference to performance. And most people wouldn't want an intercooler full of fuel!

Happy to talk more but don't want to hijack your thread.

Hi Glenn, love your work mate!
Got some questions for you,
Where did you get the decomplate?
Did you ever dyno it and get output?
