Rack and Pinion

I am confused!!. I am new to Escorts, and bought a rack and pinion unit that needs attention, but parts from another rack do not fit.  (The rack was dismantled from what looked like an Escort.)
The rack body has casting ID 72012 with CC2 underneath, and is stamped 2L16ER3/34.
It has 5 pinion teeth making it a Cam Gear model.
There are 3 slots for the passenger side bearing (which is missing).
The main issue for me is that the Damper Pad is steel rather than plastic, and it has a hole right through it.  The steel Damper Pad is also larger diameter than the plastic replacement.  There is also no spring that pushes on the Damper Pad.
I am reluctant to buy a repair kit (if I can find one) in case nothing matches up.
Have I been sold a Pup?

Repair kits are readily available, mine came with springs and cups and the P/S bearing. This is a nylon bushing and has 3 ears protruding on the sides which fit into the slots on the end of the rack housing. A little bit of lube is needed and the bush will push in by hand. Got my kit from SMCKA but not sure if he is still operating. Ebay UK should throw up a supplier.

Thanks Len.  My problem is identifying what the rack came out of, so that I can source the correct parts.  The car it came out of seemed to be a later model (Australian) Escort.  The main difference I see is the Damper Pad is steel rather than plastic, and it is larger in diameter than the plastic ones I have found in racks at the wreckers.  Also a hole goes right through the pad. rather than having a blind hole for the spring to sit in.  I have not been able to find an exploded diagram of a rack assembly with such a damper.
    Cheers

Sorry I can't answer your question but the attached pictures are from a Mk2 Escort rack and the diameter is 28.5mm and the height is 22mm.

Hi pipdog, can you throw up some pictures of what you have got? The visual might jog someones memory. There are some guys on the forum who have a parts CD. If they read this post maybe someone can throw up a diagram from the parts book? The parts kit I got also had the option of using a bronze bush, maybe there is a race/ heavy duty version.

Thanks guys.  Things are beginning to make sense.  The STEEL damper pad must have come out of a different rack.  It is 28.5mm dia, and 22.7mm long, and has no recess for a spring.  AND the curve in the bottom is bigger than the shaft diameter of 18.9mm (0.84 inch).  Might it have come out of a special competition rack which would have a larger diameter rack shaft?

The pic shows a damper and spring (on the left) out of another and measures 26.9mm dia and 19.1mm long.  The damper on the right is the steel one that came in the rack (28.5mm dia x 22.7mm long). Note that it has no recess for a spring, as the hole is the same dia right through the damper.  It also has a concave washer that just sits on the top of the damper, and no spring.

I guess now I need to find a supplier of a Mk2 damper and spring - were all Mk2 dampers 28.5mm dia?
    Thanks again for your help.

The microfiche parts list shows all 5 tooth racks (Mk1 and Mk2 including Twin Cams) use the same part, the final part number being 68AB 3K653 B2B.

    Hi Philh,
Do you get your diagrams from a parts CD? I tried to find a forum member who had one of these to get a copy but my leads ran dry. Has any other forum member got one that I could get a copy of, willing to pay for one, no problem.

I bet there's bunch of us who'd like a copy. Maybe someone can upload it to a personal web page and PM the link.

Thanks Philh.  My rack looks just like the CD cam gears illustration.  The Workshop Manual I have is a bit different.  For example, the Manual does not show the passenger side bearing 3K723 at all, and makes no mention of fitting it back during assembly!

I am still wondering what the steel damper pad came out of, and have ordered a replacement kit from UK - just hope Murphy does not strike again.
    Cheers
