std mk1 had H4 halogen lights of 60/55w, just buy 100/90w with 30% brighter white light...$30pr at auto shops. Or option 2, fit round lights and buy Altezza style crystal lamps $80pr inc globes. A relay wired in is advised.

Some random gumnut with HID's in his Hilux followed me in the dark recently. Can see why they need to be illegal. Felt like chucking rocks at his headlights.

most people don't bother aiming them properly. they are not much different to normal headlights when aimed properly

Have a look at the display in the Auto shops - you'll find the 2 brighter lights aren't legal (it should say that on the display) I've gone and bought new unsealed headlights (these are generic round headlights that come in 2 sizes to suit all cars) & then got the HID bulbs to put in. Obviously can 't use this on any special shaped lights - such as square headlight Escorts, but I'm told all round headlights are either 5 3/4" (Dual headlight) or 7" (Single headlight).

yeh I just put new globes in the focus & thought cause I drive on country roads at night I want some good lights. The bloke at repco recommended some that he uses that are great & really bright. Then when I was driving everyone started flashing me when I had the lights on (not in a good way either). So I read the packet & they are illegal for road use. Why stock & recommend lights that are illegal to use [x2x]

Because some people want them, its as simple as that.
Try the Phillips +80% Xrteme power globes, there still standard wattage but tend to give you around 80% extra vision. (80% is a bit over over the top but still a fair increase) I think they retail at $85 for 2 (h4's) if that's to dear try the power to night which are plus 50% and about $45

what your talking about are "semi-sealed beams" . you can find them in square shape, if you look around. last time i checked Hansa sell square ones, so find a retail outlet that sell Hansa products. Just brighter globes i'm not sure are illegal, however HID's are illegal without auto adjust headlights. all the late model cars with HID's you will find are fitted with auto levellers.

I don't know who would supply square headlights.
