RE: Rally Design vs Gartrac Pedalbox

The quality of Gartrak fabricated equipment has gone down hill since they were working on the works cars.although it does do the job.The only problem we discovered with them is that on long stages the brake fade would mean you had to pump the pedal.for this reason we designed a pedal box which reduced this effect but required you to be firmer with the pedal I believe it costs £260 retail but is one of the few pedal boxes on the market which allows enough space to install power steering (contact me if your interested).I would stay away from rally design stuff in general to be honest. They have started buying everything from china these days and the stuff is (for want of a better word) Pants .Ralloy are making some really good stuff especially their alloy work. If their quality is reflected in their pedal boxes i would go for that

Nice Torren, I looked at the RalDes parts and clearly they do not buy EVERYthing from China. I see that smcka has a lot of their parts and he does seem to be getting good reviews on these forums, so that speaks well for him and his parts eh. What are you running and whos parts do you use and why?
I just joined this forum as I plan to get a MK1 or MK2 Escort for 2010 and build a fast road/track car and I was hoping to find good knowledge, tips feedback etc. And it just seems we sit here all evening slagging people off from misinformed over opinionated armchair slobs who have nothing better to do! I wonder if I am in the right place, please let me find an interesting thread to read soon.......

I work for a company who manufactures virtually everything for top end suppliers and for use on our own cars.they do no yet buy everything from China but for pricing reasons its heading that way. Rally design will not be beaten on price due to their bulk buying and is a good budget option and some of their items do the job just as well. However i believe often you get what you pay for,and brakes in my opinion are very important for safety. In a modern spec car we are currently building we are fitting the AP Racing CP5516-7 which seems like a very well engineered tight pedal box.
For historic spec cars we manufacture our own based on a standard ford pedal box similar to Gartraks
Prior to your post smcka has contacted me looking into a possible supply of higher end components so that people have the option. I plan on manufacturing them in Australia if i migrate. smcka is a supplier and will be getting good reviews due to his good customer service and high interest in the items which he supplies.

I've personally purchased the pedal box that SMCKA sells and found it to be a get item, a few little mods needed however it (strengthwise) seems to be upto the task, 95% of people installing a pedalbox would be tossing the booster thus giving the brake pedal a beating, the weak point in the Escorts is the firewall it mounts to and it flexs under heavy braking and thus less efficient braking. If making a decision probably best to listen to people who have 1st hand experiences with either pedal boxes.

Torren, you don't work for Mark Solloway by any chance do you? (or maybe one of the Lepley's?). I'm not sure when Gartrac's work went down hill but the pedal box I bought 10 years ago from the them looked almost identical to a Gartrac pedal box from the 70s a friend has in his old Bond car.
Cheers

I don't work for Mark Solloway HRS i work for a company who has never advertised.so you guys probably wont know it which is best till i hand in my resignation. As the trade is so small and word gets around. The gartrak pedal boxes have not changed in design just the quality of their finish and their welding.I'm sure the rally design box will work fine but there would always be a little doubt in the back of my mind. When purchasing anything I do not expect to have to "do a few mods" to get it working. But what it ultimately boils down to is price. As you probably know it is not a massive job to fit a 3 piece bulkhead strengthener and is highly recommended for competition use.

when comparing make sure you have apples and apples. I have just looked at the Gartrac Mk1 pedal box and nearly bought it until it was pointed out that you also have to buy their Grp4 throttle pedal which bumps the price up alot.
Would have been a great bit of kit to have on the car.
I have now just placed an order for the GRP4Fabrications box....hope I have not made a mistake!!!

Well the GRP4 Fabrication Mk1 hydraulic pedal box arrived a few weeks ago. I decided to give it a go and save a few pennies over the Gartrac unit but have the certainty of not getting Chinnese poo pooe.
It looks the business and appears to be well built. I have not mounted it yet so cannot say anything about how it operates.
Might have it for sale in the near future as I MIGHT change to a floor mounted pedal box....

Shea, I had the same prob with my one I bought off Smcka. I had to shorten the threaded shaft from the master cylinders and then screw them in as far as they could go into the balance bar. Took a while (4 fittings) but pedal height is very good will post you a pic. Just persevere I did.

I had the same issue with pedals sitting too high. I simply had a spacer made up for the mc's to avoid mucking around with the mc rods.
