Mk1 Escort - very long term project

Just thought I'd start a topic on my other old banger. I got it initially to turn into a daily driver/club day track car, but its turned out there's a bit more work in it than first thought!

It looked like this when I bought it.

Check out the swedish sauna spec door trims!

The big 1300, with Webber and extractors too. A powerhouse it isn't!

Thought I'd make it all kinda the same colour. Was hoping for british racing green eventually.

The seats need some work too.

Then the fun really started when I took the interior out. Seems there wasn't much metal left in the drivers side sill (both inner and outer) and the seat rail wasn't even attached to the floor!

Very ugly in here...

Found more rust in the rear arches. Time to get the angle grinder out and start cutting.

Then my first attempt at using the welder. If nothing else the project should (hopefully) teach me a few skills. Screw buying a new wheel arch, let's build our own!

Bit rugged, but does the job. Hopefully the welding skills will get better with time.

And when its done it kinda looks like it was meant to (if a little rough). A layer of filler and a coat of paint and she'll be brand new.

Then the latest was to repaint the roof. Had a few spare hours over Christmas so stripped the 4 layers of cracked up paint off.
Download Attachment: 20061227_roof_02.jpg
70.88 KB

And there's the reason its cracked up, a heap of surface rust under it. So out with the angle grinder again. The spot of bog on the roof was only filling in a couple of minor ripples. The guy must have bought the bog in bulk, he didn't hold back when using it!

Bit of etch primer on the metal after coating it with rust converter. Hopefully that'll stop the surface rust coming back. We'll see I guess.

And the finished roof. Still some dents and bumps in it. I'll get the old panel beating tools out and try and flatten them out. Wont be perfect, but then it ain't going to be a show car.

And thats about it for now. Next I'm hoping to get a new inner sill, floor and seat mount into the drivers side.

They say any progress is good progress. So I guess even these little bits are getting me somewhere closer to being done.

Cut out the old seat rail. Fair bit of rust under there.

This is my new bit of floor and seat rail to go in.

The hole in the car is getting to be the right shape. But then my cutting wheel busted into a thousand pieces.

And the new engine. 1600 xflow, but allegedly its only got 40000 km on it. Came out of a panel van that was rolled and written off.

And that's as far as I've got.

If its not from the UK its definitely been sitting in a puddle of water or something!

Its hard to get motivated sometimes when I keep looking at how much work it needs, but as the title says, it might be on the road sometime in 2015

Thanks for the metalmeet site. That could come in very handy.

I got the new seat crossmember welded in on the weekend. I still need to get under the car and make sure its all secure, especially along the chassis rail and sill.

Small patch up before the rail goes in.

A bit of dodgy welding later, and its solid as a rock.

The finished product. And once there is some carpet over it, it'll look beautiful!

Now on to the inner sill and the rest of the floor...
