To rebuild or to buy new?

Hi team,

I am currently in the process of getting my late friends 1970 3L GT "super roo" over the pits.

Now this platform I am not familiar with by any means, but lucky for my father in law and myself, they are rather simple! (Touch wood)

Now off the bat I know I need to replace the front discs as they're rubbish, so I have taken the front brake assembly and hubs off, and have taken the flexi hose off at the hard-line on the other side of the wheel well. These will be going into the corner, but I will be reusing the calipers as they seem ok, just needing a little brush up! All new hoses will be made up and used in place of the old ones.

The next step is the master cylinder, I can see it's had a slow leak over time and will need to be either replaced or a new seal kit done on it.

So I just need to ask you fellas, is it worth rebuilding the master cylinder with a seal kit, or buying new? And if so do you guys know of any reputable places in Australia that you can get these bits and bobs from?

The Internet has such a huge amount of product it's quite tricky to navigate, so I am hoping to have a go-to shop or shops that can journey with me in this rebuild to get the bloody thing over the pits!

Apologies for the novel, forum etiquette is in the making! Cheers, Nath.

Hi Nath, I see you made your way over here. 😎

Your master cylinder is from a Falcon (XD/XE I think). One of my cars is the same, and I’ve seen other people make that mod. Hopefully it can be rebuilt, but it appears aftermarket units are still available.

Depending on how long the car has been sitting, I’d overhaul the entire brake system, rebuilding calipers, flushing brake lines, replacing rear slave cylinders, etc. Can never be too careful with brakes.

Welcome to this forum. There are a lot of very knowledgeable people here with years of capri ownership to draw on.

    Cheers

That does look Falconish , wouldn't it be too big of bore to actually work , IE being like there's a brick behind the pedal. Only saying cause I did a Falcon xc master on my MK2 escort and their was about 5mm pedal movement before it went solid. Escort have virtually the same brake system as Capri . Just saying from my experience... Now I use Ford Laser MC as new old stock is about and usually cheap.
As cosworthfreak says, if the cars been sitting for a while/decades it's best to go thru the whole breaking system, maybe new lines as well .

+1 for overhauling the calipers and rear slaves at the same time as the master cylinder. Also the master may have leaked into the brake booster too, I know that's what my Escort did after sitting for a long time.

From the photos the car looks really tidy and my condolences for your friend. Hope the car brings back good memories.

    Hey Nathan,
welcome to the forums, nice to see another Capri.
I redid my 1600's brake with EBC and HiSpec  stuff from Burtons af few years ago.
For the last Escort, and current van project, I've try to use local suppliers like Mike at Yesterford, and Carl at SMCKA.
Depending on where you are, these may be options, and pricing was pretty good.
The advantage with Mike is he has stuff in stock 99% of the time, has a pricelist, and you can just email him with a wishlist, and know you'll get stuff thats correct for your car.
The M16 std Capri calipers are worth rebuilding, and you can make the copper lines yourself if you buy a coil of tubing.
These are Mk1 Capri legs for the current project, with the same calipers that have been spaced.
Plenty of people here to help you with suggestions if you get stuck.
