Bonnet release cable retaining clip early MK2

Guys,
This is going to do my head in so I thought I'd put it out there. HELP

For clarification, my RS is actually a 1975 MK2, (I believe a Bob Holden one).

So the clip that holds the outer cable to the body, and allows the inner cable to slide through when you pull the lever to pop the bonnet decided to break the other day.

I have sourced a replacement clip. Actually 5 of them NOS in original Ford packaging (if anyone needs one).

So the first pic is the bracket the pull handle fits to, and the other pics are the replacement clip (identical to the one which broke)

For the life of me I cannot figure out how to fit the clip. I feel something is broken on the bracket?
I stripped it back to a shell and completely rebuilt the body 8 years ago now, but I'm definitely missing something, I think its my mind

FYI the 1970 MK1 Capri has a very similar clip fitted in a horizontal orientation, but comparing the two did not help.

Thanks Guys

The cable goes thru the hole and the clip is fixed to the side of the bracket, it's designed to choke the outer cable to lock in place. Stupid arrangement I agree, I hate them...

Thanks Marty. Given my predicament here, a photo would tell a thousand words as they say!

I can't figure out any orientaion of the clip where it can fix to the bracket and still align with the cable?

You think thats stupid, try the fact that to release the outer cable where it is clamped down, on the front panel (next to the radiator), you have to take the nose cone off. If the cable should ever break I'll be modifyiing that arrangement. Pity I never thought about it when putting it together.

    Great thanks Marty.
Got a busy weekend on the boats, but will definitely get a minute somewhere. Bit like a dog with a bone.

In regards the outer cable clamp next to the radiator, you have to wonder what genius thought of that!
Why not put a captive nut on the front face and just bolt the clamp on, with the bolt coming in from the engine bay side?

Yup, UK Ford engineers for you. I agree tho the cable can be rerouted to in front of the panel the bolt/clamp is reversed . I might be getting this car running in a few weeks after 20yrs parked up. 1st job will be to dump the sludge that used to fuel and flush lines.
