Been a it of a funny week, and ended up on a side project that I didn't need....

Have been storing a mates bike for many years, and with cleaning up for the the inevitable selling of the place, decided to dust it off and return it.

Thought I'd detail it and get it started for ease of moving. Unfortunately when starting it, I fuel line had perished and a backfire caused a fire. Luckily I had a dry chem handy and damage was for the best part superficial to some loom sleeves and connectors.

Pricing bmw bike parts made my eyes water. Couldn't get parts here and a 2nd hand loom out of the US was $300+ aud before postage.....

Bit of a google of the part numbers on the connectors showed that they were also used in BMW cars of the same era... so with that in hand I was off to the wreckers. Managed to find the identical parts and was charged a grand total of $3.20 for the 2 connectors.

Couple of hours depinning and replacing burnt connectors now its just the loom covering to clean up and its like it never happened.

Out of gas so did a few little things to keep me busy.

Drilled out spot welds on rust repair sections ready for grafting. Prepared the rear Latch ready for welding in washers and nut inserts. Removed rear taillight ready for the horrible d pillar and my rare as hens teeth NOS rear vent arrived. I'm sure it'd have to be close to the only one in the world. 😅

Had a little time spare so made a quick start on thr patches for the D piller. Cut them out of a spare do which has a very similar curve to the section. Needs a bit more trimming, and also need to do a bit of repairs in the body however it's looking promising.

Bit of work to go however I'm super happy with how it's looking so far after the first hit with the sander.

Not an overly productive day today after coming off nights and struggled to get motivated.

Still made a bit of progress, finished off the rear d pillar and started some exploration on the drivers sill/footwell.

As always, worse than I thought and under many intertwined layers. Still a bit more to cut our yet until I am down to some good metal however I'll get there.

After unpicking the donor sections, rust treating and zinc coating they were ready to out in.

First couple of layers went OK(ish.) But of seam sealer on the inside layers as an extra precaution, so will wait a bit until the last layer goes on. So far, so good.

Few photos mid plug weld and then sealed.

Should leave some holes for fish oil or similar. Never want to do this again.

Should leave a selfie in there, for the next person who does it again. :)

There are factory holes along the top and bottom of the sills.

I do plan to fish oil everything at the conclusion of welding.

Love it, however I can't see me either selling this one or someone else mad enough to restore it again! 🤣🤣🤣

Another layer done.

Guard to go, although I cut it short so it could test my patience (skill).

While waiting for the seam sealer to dry, I pulled the front screen in preparation for the next bit of rust repairs.

Removed the front chrome trims using a keyring bottle opener. Had previously seen it done on a youtube clip. Worked perfectly 👌.

First look at the screen surround.

There are only 3 areas that will need replacing and after the sill/guard, don't look too bad. We'll see when I get to them.

Good going there, nothing like a good rust repair.

Got a bit done today. Started with one of the easier sections then explored the drivers side A pillar. It's not pretty.

Scuttle panel should come up ok woth a skim of filler.

This is going to take some work.
