Well it was kinda what I expected and I have a shopping list now. 1st gear has had it, so may as well get the long first conversion from Burtons. 2nd gear also gone - add it to the list Third is useable, not too much wear - which is good because its part of the input shaft and the most expensive gear apart from the long first conversion. Fourth in good condition, hardly any wear really. First / Second synchro hub has had it. 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th baulk rings (the brass synchro part) all done for and need replaced. All told about $1000 in bits, so the over hall will cost about 1600 all told. Expensive endeavor this!

Do I know him ? He bought my orange Mexico zetec a few years back. Us locals usual seek other repairers due to the prices he quotes and other things. Those in the know avoid so he's well known around the community !!

The Type 9 was on the high side price wise to be fair and as always one appeared cheaper on the Australian Ford Facebook page literally two days after I got this one home. This was after spending the better part of this year checking it every day . Murphy's law really. Well I know now for future. If I dwell on it though I'll just do my own head in, at least I've got one now, nothing inside it is broken, just worn out. I'll replace those parts, put some new bearings and seals in it and it will go forever. I'll be cleaning up the case, adding a drain plug and painting it over the weekend to give myself something to do.

I feel sorry for you, if it's too good to be true there's a catch . Wondering why you didn't option a rx8 box, it might have been cheaper and maybe better, I dunno ..

Nah all good mate, don't feel sorry for me, I've got the gearbox I want and it'll be a good transmission once I am finished with it. I've done the calculations (well the tremec website did ) and with this trans and 205/60/13's plus my 3.89 diff she will reach 55km in first at 6000rpm and sit at 100kph in 5th at 3000 on the dot so it will be very drivable.

Thanks for the update, always leaves a hole in the garage when the shell goes out to the shop. Good idea on the drain plug in the box, wish I'd got around to doing it in mine.

Bit of work today cleaning up the bellhousing, transmission case and lid. Then I drilled the hole for the drain plug and put down some primer. Just got to wait for the m14 tap to arrive to put a thread in the hole. I used rust-oleum rusty metal primer this time, it sticks like poop to a blanket as long as you prep the surface right and I'll follow that up with Metalshield matt black. I didn't use the Rust Seal for this part as I didn't want a shiny gearbox mated up to a matt black engine block. My dad is off to the UK in a few weeks so I've got the parts I need for the box delivered to my uncles place and he is going to bring them back for me, so with a bit of luck the gearbox will be back together in September. You can see the pile of parts I'm replacing in the box sitting behind the case in this shot. Funnily enough you can actually see my NOS clutch fork in this shot, I completely forgot I bought it and fitted it back in the day due to the original one cracking. Young me didn't even bother taking the part sticker off it , that guy was a liability! Look forward to ticking this one off, sitting it on a shelf and then forgetting about the amount of money I spent on it. I'm sure that it will become a distant memory after the first drive!

You should leave it clay brown, looks different ! Clutch forks tend to crack in Escorts if driven happily. I normally weld a short length of 3mm strap across the wide sides and another along the length to the cable hole, which is also a weak point so that gets a 6mm rod welded around the outside of the hole. Bit of overkill but cheap insurance it won't ever break again..

Have you got a mock up of where to place the metal? I might do that as a precaution as I will be putting a uprated clutch in.

Wasn't happy with the flat black after a coat, so upped it to satin. Looks a lot nicer I think, had a crack at polishing up the sandwich plate too, came up not too bad. Might have a crack at the tail housing to save myself the cost of bead blasting it. Happy with how it's looking, just need to put the last coat down in a day or so. Looks good but reckon the tail housing should stay ally colour, even just silver it with clear coat.. Have you thought to buy or make a grit blast cabinet?. I bought one a few years ago, great tool to have and did some minor mods like better lighting etc. My next mod is to convert it to a vapour blaster which will give a much better finish and use less air .

Oh i meant polishing up the tail housing, not painting, definitely leaving it alloy. I've gone down the Youtube rabbit hole for making a DIY sand blaster box and it doesn't look all that hard . Damn you Marty!

Bit bored at the moment waiting for parts so I mocked up the T9 to get a betting visualization of it. It'll look great once that rear casing matches the sandwich plate.
