Relays for headlight wiring

Hi all,
New to the forum, recently acquired a Mk1 2dr (my second Mk1 and 3rd Escort) however this is the first Esky I've owned for about 20 years. I'm about to swap out the rectangular lights for round and have the grille, headlights, buckets etc.... just looking for advice on what relay to use to save the switches and I've also heard it is wise to reverse a diode across the relay coil. Not being an auto electrician I'm hoping someone can help me by letting me know exactly what sort of relay I need, where to use it and how to wire the diode (and what sort of diode).
Appreciate any help on offer. Thanks, Mic.

    Hi and welcome !
Just use a regular black 4 pin relay or 5 pin to run both lights.
I'm no car sparky either, tho I do know mk1 Escort does melt switches as the current goes thru the switch to the lights instead of the switch being a switch to turn on lights.

I generally use a relay box the size of a cigarette packet , they've fuses and work great , twin relay kit from eBay or your local parts shop..
