Well I think I'm up to some wiring.
I've had a bunch of wiring looms from a long time ago and decided to pull them out and check what they are . After some wrestling with the pile of spaghetti I layed them out, 1 is a mk2 escort non tacho front half.
There's 3x mk1 back halfs, 1 is a van being longer with slight other differences.
A Capri loom, no idea how I got that, never done Capri ever..
And 3x mk1 front looms but only 1 centre loom. So I have all I need..
My plan was or still is to use that Procomp loom I bought 3yrs back but it will still need splicing into some existing loom. With what I have in Escort wiring I will just use that but am going to strip and clean it all up as I go . Whether I run standard switches or go with modern dial type I'm not sure, there is added stuff I need to plumb in for the sunroof, electric sunvisors, glovebox light etc etc , fun !!
At some stage I'll be making the roof lining with material that's designed for replacing modern car linings, it's cheap at about $55 for 2mtr in black and will use an old lining as template, but cause the sunroof takes up a few rods it'll only need the 2x rearmost loops stitching in plus the C pillars. Still waiting on the right size needle before I tackle any stitching.
Just had give it was rince and for the bonnet..

Haha, wish I could do that sort of thing . We know it's a for a great cause either way , just hope she's still around once its completed in 6 to 12 months. It's the same process as your RS once built, is reassembly and check/repair/replace, paint as we go..

did you seen any of the Adelaide Shannons Rally over the weekend?
I didnt realise Colin McRae was in it as well along with , plus a few local hot Escorts and the Datta kept up well.

I tried to watch some of the live footage from Friday and Saturday, but mostly saw the BMW/Porsche clubs and drone footage of the roads.

I wimped out as the weather was looking pretty bad , also getting soaked to watch 4 or 5 escorts isn't really a fun way to spend the day. Once the rain came out didn't let up, drenching day..
You mean Alister McCrae , didn't know the cars have about 360bhp from 2.5 . Frank was just sliding around having fun..
The live leak was ok afterwards so you can hunt the good bits... To much modern hype these days it's not like it was 20+ yrs ago. Ended up watching some muscle car masters from Sandown instead, more interesting !

Some more small stuff in the mk1 today, which seems to take ages .
The first part is to strip away the factory grey loom tape and just check over the wires and then I decided where to re wrap the loom, since this is a 1300 loom and I'm fitting a pinto there's a lot of lengthening and shortening of wires plus try to neaten things up while there.
As the fuse box will be inside the cabin instead of the usual bulkhead position ,I needed to design a bulkhead plug. After an hour on tinkercad I had created a plug using the site new radius maker. Anyway I changed the filament to TPU and got printing.

Mk1 had the trailer style plug plus the added side bunch plugs on the fuse box as seen here

While here I lengthened the headlight wires since the H4 plugs were brittle, the headlights came with new plugs but the wires are very thin so I dissected them and soddered thicker wire. Making then longer allowed for the amount that's inside the car now

Some of the loom is still exposed as I'll need to tap into some wires so once I've got that sorted it'll be all taped up

Ain't that true, doing such simple stuff becomes a chore.

Retro fitting modern parts into an old car like simple headlights today, I bought trendy crystal style lights years ago and apart from 1 having the lens glued on slightly skew whiff I needed to drill in a spot for the parker bulb but my haste I had drilled it to low which means slotting the backing bucket adjuster so the plug can fit. And then I installed the lights only to find that the locator slots are miles out so needed to grind new ones in place, and then fitting the chrome ring, the light was loose... What next! Then I glued in some high density foam to take up the slop which worked. I did none of this on the other side and just held it there till the time was screwed up tight

Not to much going on recently, just been getting the rolling gear
ready for when the RP is painted and ready to lift off the trolley/dolly.
Also my McMillan compressor blew a head gasket over a few weeks of usage. I've had it for about 15yrs so it's been really reliable, the air gauge was stopping at 95psi even though it was still pumping and I could feel air blowing back or the intake. Here's the gasket in question..

Now that's fixed albeit temporarily as buying a gasket for the pump is about $160 in a kit , I have recently found a shop in USA that has the gaskets and plate for a magic $16us so I've asked for postage.
Compressor running without head gasket and just RTV as a gasket is temporary but the compressor sounds better and fills the tank quicker with it's new HC conversion
Back to RP , I am hoping to either paint the shell tomorrow or Thurs as both days are about 30deg. I decided to paint the dash panel and seat posts black satin before the big yellow goes on.

Next update after paint

Are you going to tape up the satin parts then blast it with the yellow inside? or just go straight over with deadener?

The inside is pretty good and has that factory overspray look , I have tried to replicate how it was... all the deadner is as original apart from some small patches that I repaired and deadenerd after. That's it for inside unless I've missed out something .
Still wrapping up the car today so paint tomorrow on a balmy 34deg dry day , in the 'room' it'll be about 25 just about perfect !

Must be a world record for me painting 2 cars in 6 months. Here is the rally pack in it's original Pine n Lime . The compressor went well without a problem as well.

Thanks Mark
I used a different brand of 2pk from my mk1 , I won't get in the technical side but warm weather really helped (35°) , there are some great areas and some that'll need a cut n polish but overall I'm well chuffed , I'll do the blackouts around the sides and grill slot plus the sill strip this week then I can remove all the tape and plastic sheets.
We're onto the parts cleaning and checking process now , yesterday we stripped the struts apart and to our surprise , well mine mostly cause team member isn't savvy on mech, the strut inserts was expecting to be boring old oilers but no, they are the classic Pedders Red gas jobbies and still feel plenty good to reuse again.

I'll be doing my famous trick of cutting the spring platform off and dropping it 1in and welding back on, this should level the height a bit better.

Ok so onto my mk1 now, place of research with ignition barrels of which I'm sure the mk1 didn't have one when I bought it, interior was burnt and stripped. Anyhow my mission is to find the difference between mk1 and mk2 barrel blocks to see if they are interchangeable, all I can see the difference is the half notch for the column is deeper, not to much different as pics show.

Ok I removed the key barrels for more studies, for good reason, 1 , to see how they come apart for future readers . First the mk1, it needs a hole drilling where shown here

This spot has a spring lock and needs to be pressed in then the barrel can be pulled out, as you can see I attempted to drill the barrel so I could turn it but wasn't needed, just some force to knock it out..
Mk2 is more user friendly for extracting the key barrel where the spring tab is exposed as seen here..

So you do need a key to turn the ign on to the first notch (acc) then it'll virtually just pull out with the key.
Now the kicker part , research and more research , back in the early days I was told that a EA Falcon ign barrel will go in, never done it but have seen it in a friend's RS bank in the late 90s , but now we're in the 20s and finding stuff out is easier. So my theory is and should fit with minor mods is the Focus mk1 ign barrel which it dates back to around 1987 in the Transit van plus gallons of other Fords ever since up to about 2010 , Mondeo, Focus, fiesta, Kak etc , so I've bought a new barrel with keys from good old Alispress for $25 which comes with 2x for locks as well, no transponder . The back of the jet barrel looks identical to mk2 Escort so we'll know when it arrives. I can make stuff fit so I'm not too worried if there's a little modding needed, I'll keep youse posted ..

Satin black day today , doing the window blackouts and bottom sill etc on the rally pack which I hope is the last of the shell painting . While I had some paint left I resprayed my mk1 dash top as I didn't like the gloss effect
.
Pics of the mk2 all masked up, I prolly went overboard on coverage but rather be safe

Even did those alloy garnish bits..

All unwrapped
