Do you like the taste of isocyanate Deano lol ?

Decided to get the clock pod ready to knock a mold from, the prep takes ages even tho it doesn't look much, it's gotta not hook back in itself or I'll be $250 down and looking for another.
Making the mold is fiddly as it's all inside the pod and pocket, I'll get there.. This is the second mold I'll have made as the first one was like 20yrs ago and it succumbed to over use and cracked.
Anyways here's pics of it ready for release agent and gelcoat. The round thing is the clock tube, I'm not too worried about this if it's a fail as modern clocks lock in a different way, unless you're an anorak and expect it...!

At least I have a healthy breakfast

Going along nicely, although didn't expect it to jump the queue by that much!
Glad its you doing it not me, as i'm not sure 2 hot cross buns would work well as mold formwork.
It would from mold to mould after a few days.

I religiously try not to taste IC, thats one i'm not a fan of.
I'm sure epoxy, polyester, vinyl, and all of the West fillers are just as nasty in the long run, but i've been pretty good about wearing ppe for a while. Even wearing a breathing mask when welding now.
Still forget to turn the welding mask on though...:(

I do the ppe thing the agricultural way, make like Camel eye squints and hold the breath , .. Well I do use safety eyes as I've had so much foreign matter land in them, mostly while wearing the eyes, learnt to not aim sparks into face is a big help too.

Just for the Deano's out there, I now have a clock pod mold , everything pulled out easily including the clock tube which means less stress on the mold and part during cracking them free. I did install a nut in there so it helps push out the part but this will be blended before a part is built. Place orders thru PM, I'll start making them maybe Monday.. colour will be black gelcoat unless preferred otherwise

I goin to the small Ford day tomorrow, it's goin' to be a warm one too, might Park my car under a tree !

Great day at the Small Ford Day, apart from the heat and humidity I caught up with bunch of people, one has a yt channel Skidz Garage with his povvo mk2 he got running after 18yrs in a rickety shed with the cars roof loaded up with pigeon poop . Also caught up with Simon from Si Fiction , he films local car shows and his own RS2000 build. I'll put the link up once he's got it edited etc.
One good thing is my mk1 Focus won a trophy, pretty easy when it's the only one there !!

Getting on with the clock pod mold, I've cleaned and waxed them and brushed on black gelcoat, of the weather is cool enough tomorrow rvo I'll layer them up and wait till Friday to part them , see how things go this week 👍

I wanted to get along to the Small Ford Sunday here in Melbourne on the 4th but couldn't make it due to the partners parents arriving - jealous! Nice work winning the trophy .

The clock pod looks great, you should have a crack at dash pad covers if you're ever feeling spicy, I'm sure people would love a "clip" over fiberglass cover to either protect their existing or cover up cracks.

Congrats on the trophy Marty, jealous of your small Ford days over there, we don't have one here in WA, small Fords seem to be a bit underground. Or maybe I'm just not getting invited

Capri clinic over here was knocking out fibreglass dash tops back in the day. I've had mine for years, it's covered in grained vinyl and near on impossible to spot from an original, better though, it's never going to crack like they all did

Thanks guys 👍🏆

I remember the Capri clinic stuff they had selling a while back, didn't the place burn down or something a while back taking molds and machinery?

The mk2 dashtop is in the to do list whether I make a near as dammit copy or buy one from UK to pilfer . The grain of the hardest to replicate, trying to find a wrap with the texture to use.

WA clubs, maybe just do a Google hunt for car shows about the place. Gotta say even we here in sa don't hear much of car shows or speed events, makes it harder as I don't watch TV or commercial radio stations

Thats right Marty, his place caught fire, he was still living and operating out of there, albeit with an open roof when I got my dash top. He made all sorts of other stuff too, he was also selling F100 dashtops at the time.

There are a couple of small Ford related car clubs over here, I largely keep to myself though after I saw some ugly politics in the Tickford club when I had the TE50. We do have a great pre-85 / steel bumper club locally that do cars and coffee style meets near home, I'll usually take one of the cars down for a look but thats about it.

Found it..

Car Styling Covering Wrapping

I'm going to get a spool of this stuff to try and skin over a dashtop or even the door cards, depending on how pliable and quality, worth a try and will keep you updated

interesting stuff Marty.
I wonder how it would go with some heat to help it contour around the dashtop.

So where you thinking Croc texture?
Might be a hit for the FNQ scene?

If it stuck ok permanently, i'd almost try skinning over the dash as a fix, and leaving it as a reapir.
It has to look better than the moulded carpet covers.

Hmm, croc dash and matching doorcards in the van would be the ducks kiwis I reckon.
If they only did it in white.... :)

Here is the clock pod glassed up and was curing for about 5 days in the warm Adelaide weather in the shed

This is the part straight out of the mold

This one is bought by Deano and will be posted this week
Rear door cards molds got a layer or 3 of glass

And once they cured after a week I popped them apart and cleaned all the release agent off

Already started making my rear door cards, threw the class on them today

Looking around the stash of getting rare bits I came across a heater switch bezel found in 1 of my mk2 vans, I thought that not many people have these parts as they mainly have the full padded cover panel. If you want the RS custom clock pod you need this panel to complete the dash so I'm making a mold of this now..

And because I had a bit of black gelcoat left over I got making the next clock pod

Hi Guys,
Been off grid for a while. Visited (very) sunny Vic to pick up the boat.

Marty, A mate here got an upholsterer to redo his (MK2) dash pad. It looked good at first with a nice textured black vinyl, but after a few days and some sun it took on a different appearance. I feel this will be a trial and error thing?
Is there any way of getting the effect by using this vinyl (or similar) on the mold, or will the resin kill it?

Hi Mark, if it's the soft vinyl type which has fabric on the back, I don't think it can be used even with mold release agent. The gelcoat will weigh it down and cause inverted creases so I wouldn't try it. I did a pr of mk1 front door trims years ago and and there's remnants of depressions but only slight and hardly seen when on the door.

The weather was slightly stupid hot over the weekend so I started making a header mock-up kit, only cause I seen Dave's Garage do it and thought I might need those one day for my cars.
They are 1.5in dia for now but will make larger ones later on.

Parts have raised size indicator and lines so you can match up what angle you need to transfer to the real stainless pipe, there's 16x pieces in this donut !

Making the straight parts I started with a 1in and and doubled it till I got to 4in, and then remove the top one for the 3in tubes , different colors for different heights

Action shot of more curves being printed, this bunch was a throw away as the feed didn't like doing silly dots so I turned the tubes facing side on and came up spot on, still learning this stuff!
