the 'deluxe' version of the Marty's RS guage pod comes complete with a fitting template. So out with the grinder: and trial fitted with an old gauge, no poverty pack van any longer! and back out again, and epoxy primed.

had too much paint mixed up, so the rear floor repair got an undercoat: Hopefully it went off ok in the cold shed. A few runs, but plenty of build up to play with. Next job will be to topcoat the enginebay, and start painting the underfloor. There should be a roll of brake tubing coming shortly. For now, I think we'll stay with rebuilt M16's and new ventilated disks.

I had a bit of a win yesterday, whilst waiting for some new vented disks to come in. My collection of M16 with siezed pistons had grown: Previous attempts to free them had been fruitless.Had tried soaking them, numersous FBH's, to no avail. This worked though: once the right collection of infill sockets were found and giggled around to get purchase, only a minute or so later.... bingo and out so I've freed up 4 calipers, and have 2 more still soaking. To get the van on the raod quicker, we'll go with the current struts, with the vented M16's. New rebuild kits and disks are on order.

So that's where my 10mm socket went.. Nice job unseizing the pistons, a quick sonic bath and good to go!!

sonic bath? if the spa was working I'd be temped to drop them in for a bit of a soak. Not much hapenning on the van, well there is, just that its not very interesting to post. Trying to seamseal the floor upside down is a trick, and painting the underneath, wheel tubs etc. I did get some more done on the front brakes. Painted red of course, as they stop faster: but the spacer kit I was sent was a bit off. The spacer plates should have been handed, due to different dia bolts, and the recess on one face for the o ring to fit. I had 2 identical kits, so could only get one to assemble up correctly. The left kit is wrong, its just the same as the rhs kit:

The calipers are looking good but I think you made the same mistake I did initially, the spacers on the bolts! I dont think they go there, I think they space the caliper out on the hub to allow for the capri disc to fit and center properly - could be wrong though as I am yet to put mine back together!

Looking at the alen key and socket contraption, Was that so you could spin the pistons to get them out? I haven't tried that and always struggle when you can't get them moving with m/c pressure.
Might give something similar a try on my next set.
Thanks.

Found a picture, this is how it should be when you're putting it back together. That's why i was on the hunt for shorter bolts and ended up shaving mine down. The alen key trick works great if you don't have compressed air or they're so seized up the air wont budge them. Basically you just jam a whole bunch of stuff in there so you can get leverage .

thanks to the eagle eyed viewers! What if I said I'd just put those washers on there so I wouldn't lose them? (Not true, but the garage is a mess just the same.) I would have figured it out thwen the time came to fitting them,, maybe. You are right about the allen key thing, air had failed to budge any, and being able to rotate the pistons helped in the end. Some progress from this weekend. The roof got another sand and thick coat of primer filler, the repair patch is almost invisible slight waver where the old vent was: front vent modification looks messy but gets covered up, and was needed to adapt the roof shape to the vent profile: topcoated dash came up well enough, apart from the odd run which is hard to avoid when its so cold: and the engine bay got a bit more topcoat, before runnign out:

Progress is looking good Deano, enjoying watching vicariously at the moment, I've packed the cars away for the wet months and with my back playing up again I haven't been in the garage much. As crusty as it looks that engine is a peach. Original air cleaner, cam cover, pollution gear, exhaust manifold and stove. You don't see them like that any more. Out of a Cortina by the looks of the engine mounts and fan pulley? The last whole engine I bought was Cortina with all the original gear and a/c compressor and mount (thats why I grabbed it) with the other goodies being stashed for another day. Oh and PS whats the old freestyle bike with the tuffs in the background? I thought I was the only one with a penchant for those

Yea it's definitely a rare find with all the clip ons present even if it's a Cortina engine...
Ptmk2, thats what they call the London bus syndrome, it's happened to me heaps of times. I was looking for a '91-95 Ford courier turbo diesel extra cab with tray for ages but nothing around so I went the next best and bought a petrol 4x4 from Perth, while it was on the train coming to Adel, I seen 2 others locally for less money... Your looking a particular part or car for months or years, decide it's a frugal search and buy the next best, then within a week 3 turn up at once !

London Bus happens to me then, every time I buy something lately. The next day, hour, or popup even, and you see something better or 1/2 the price. PT, The Cortina Pinto looks like an easy install for someone, engine mounts and all! Change the oil maybe and chuck her in! Drew, the garage is full of toys collected by an old man now. Not sure if my back would let me get back on the sailboards, and there's a BloKart landyacht in there somewhere, which is great fun down the beach in a blow. Tuffs were what we couldn't afford as kids, picked up at swapmeets so it was good to do up the odd BMX here and there. These are my last Swapmeet finds in Maldon, a couple of weeks ago. An AirBlaster, unused and complete with box. My brother and I had these when I was about 12. As soon as I tried it out, the sound of the air piston motor took me straight back to then. $30: The second find I'm really liking. A USA Felt bike, Aluminium and carbon. Its nice to have a smooth bike to ride again, although the tyres are bl**dy skinny. Ive never had a bike that you change gears with the brake levers. Its so light, and just fangs along. $25, plus about $50 for a new chain. The van got one step forward today, and one back. I'll take some pics for next week, but more painting underneath, and some topcoat around the roof gutters and vent, which was good. Bad side is the std pedalbox isnt fitting with the larger wheel woks. I had hoped that it would be a matter of massaging the wok to give the needed room for the accelerator pedal to function, but it might need some further thinking.
