You'll find the engine number on the right hand side of the V6 block at the back of the RH head, firewall end or rear of the block on a flat surface. If the engine is still in the car, approach from the right hand guard side, leaning over the brake booster, armed with a torch and a cleaning rag.

    Happy hunting, Terry

    Further to my Simple question.
Should the engine number stamped on the engine be the complete Vin? eg;CK17...… and should it be neat in line stamped?  My car only has the 5 digit part of the Vin No stamped on the engine and it is stamped all messy and not neatly in line.  Is this normal?  cheers PSR

Engine numbers were stamped by hand so not in line. Fonts were different in size. Sounds like it's a 1970 car or motor.

Its A 72 car. Should the CK17 etc be stamped too, not just the 5 numerals? Looks like it was stamped whilst engine was already in car and the stamper was drunk. Are they stamped before placement in vehicle?  cheers

I'm guessing that unless the last 5 digits of your Chassis number eg. CK17ME12345P are 12345P, then your Capri has had a Repco or the like reconditioned engine transplant at some stage. If your Capri is indeed a 1972 vintage then yes, it should have had the full Chassis number eg. CK17ME12345P as the engine number. And yes, they should have/would have been stamped before fitting into the body.

Thanks guys, I can only assume that my engine is transplant. The 5 digits on engine do match the Vin number digits  on car but do not include CK17 or P. Thanks again PSR
