Red MK2 Two door

Thought i might make a bit of thread as im starting to post a bit more and ask questions on a few fb groups so it always helps put a name to a post so to speak.

Few years back this article popped up on speed hunters and made me get on gumtree the same night. Have always loved escorts but never brought one when i was younger as parents advocated to save my money etc. Well im older now and had to front up a fair few more dollars and finally brought one.

http://www.speedhunters.c...ler-racing-rs1800-bda/

I brought a in pieces mk2 2 door and proceeded to put it in my mums garage, and its sat there, for about 4 yrs now. In the mean time my evo blew up, got rebuilt and blew up again so once i was able to sort that mess out and move it on this beast popped up on gumtree.

Essentially body work had been done and put back together by a retired older guy, downsides were it ran pretty rough but drove and had a terrible vinyl interior in it. I snapped it up and proceeded to rip out the vinyl interior and have some recaro fishnets retrimmed to match the uk rs2000 spec seats, rear done to match also. Had the carby rebuilt by a mechanic and few small things done and she now drive like a dream.

Always small things to do but slowly and surely working through those, im just enjoying driving it around.

Cheers

Robbie

Another one from a cars and coffee

Starting to collect most of the superpro catalogue to replace most of the bushes in the car. Mechanic had the car hoist and have a few maintenance things to take care of such as wheel bearings etc.

Other then that i think ill order a anti dive kit soon, 22mm kmac bar is waiting in the shed, sourced some capri struts to do a coil over conversion and have king lowered leafs waiting under the bed,

The anti-dive kit will stiffen up your front end nicely,I have one on my RS, don't need a strut brace.

Few photos of my car from a Coffee n Chrome event here in SA, Think they had an estimated 700ish cars. I was the only escort i think. Few nice cortinas, god id love a mk1 2 door.

Also a shot of the ultimate dream car, well besides a f40.

Ive ordered a full front Bilstein front strut/coilover set up from grp4 with allow hubs to replace the standard units, i thought do it once do it right and the fact the strut assembly is new and not 30-40yrs old gives me some peace of mind. Unfortunately they have been held up with stub axles being forged so hoping to have them come early into the new year. Slowly ticking off maintenance items but enjoying driving the car as my daily on days off.

Very nice looking escort! Is the paint Monza red? I actually like the 'pommie poverty pack' door cards better than the roll-tops.  You just need to round up some front quarter bumpers to complete the look in my opinion.
Are you coming across to Victoria for the Small Ford Show next month?

Thanks, i actually like the non roll top cards also. The pattern matches the seat trim and ties it altogether.

Color is sting red i believe, holden color but the old guy liked it, tbh im not that stoked on it but its not something id rush to change and if i did unsure what id go, maybe British racing green? white? i do like the blue Lee used on his rs2000 build. Newer colours on older cars helps freshen them up i think.

I actually do have some bumperettes stashed away but havent made the move to fit them up yet. It seems to be the look everyone goes to so ive stayed away from it a bit.

Unfortunately i wont be able to make it to SFS, The car loses a bit of oil out the back of the gearbox so i dont like driving it too far from home until that is fixed, we have replaced the rear seal and it didnt help the issue so seems we need to investigate further. Also have a wedding coming up in march so funds are limited.

Also thinking of putting some sound deadener under the carpet, I’ll need to redo the carpet as it’s “melted” near where the cat sits. The cat was heat wrapped and I figure that’s not the best for it.

Any suggestions on products other then dynamat? Do people do deadened, underlay then carpet?

Wish I’d got an action shot of this at amf, sliding into the corners was awesome.

I've worked on two cars of late with oil leaks out the back of the gearbox and in both cases the problem was the same. Oil was leaking out the tail-shaft yoke. There's like a welsh plug in the end and that was allowing oil to seep past. In my own car I never had any major leak while I was running Redline heavy shockproof oil but after a gearbox rebuild I changed to Castrol fully synthetic (a very thin oil). Next day I had a dinner plate sized puddle underneath the car. Funny thing was the oil wasn't dripping from the end of the gearbox extension housing end under the seal but from the front uni joint area. Pulled the tail-shaft out stood it upright and put some petrol in the end and it slowly dribbled out. Degreased the area around this plug as best as I could then wiped a bead of silicone sealant around the area and no more leak! Exactly the same issue in a friends car. He had a persistent minor leak that he wasn't too concerned about but when his box took 600ml out of 1.3lt to top up he became concerned. Same oil drops on universal joint area, same fix and bone dry now.

re qtr bumpers, I just think you have the 'sporty' rear spoiler and that 'sporty' bumperettes would balance the look at the front. (But only my opinion)
Hope you find your gearbox leak,

thanks for posting SFE, I have identical dinner plate of clean gearbox oil, and assumed must be rear seal :(
but will try your suggestion when I get a few round tuits spare.

+10 on the bumperettes, sorry Robbie but it's criminal to have your car looking so good and not finish it off with them. Come on, you know you want to, and nothing wrong with following the flock.

Yeah thanks for the feedback SFE, my mechanic actually advised that we change the yoke and uni as he was a little suspect of it but i think its still leaking from the back of the box, good point on oil viscosity, im unsure whats in there atm but maybe worth a change to a thicker oil.

Ha real peer pressure to put on some bumperettes, they will need a little tidy up and repaint but maybe in the next few months ill swap over.
