Using a shorter rear 48" English axle

Hi all,

First post, absolute newbie to cars in general, one hell of a restoration project before me on a Mk1 3L Capri.

The car is anything but stock and in need of almost everything replacing. I decided I would go down the modified route, sorry purists. I don't have infinite cash to restore to concours at this point in my life.

I am wanting to stick some extra wide wheels in the back without a modifying the shell, so no cologne kit or bubble arches. I am going to tub the back for the extra room.

I have been looking into a shorter axle, like a 48" English axle from a Mk1 Escort. Would this work with minimal effort? As parts go, are these interchangeable? What else would need changing if so?

Even a pointer to what to look into would be great.

What I am planning on getting...
EBAY ITEM NO: 192611332894

Many thanks in advance.
Danny

Depends on the power output and budget.

Escort axle will fit with just the mounts changed and is probably the simplest and easiest. Benefits are same stud pattern and can keep 13's if that is your thing. Downside is, if you are planning on upping the power, it will be your week point.

Borg warner and or hilux will hold more power but cost more and require more fab. Both will require shortening, stud pattern change,  (or change fronts) tail shaft and 14's or larger.  (13's can fit over early 2wd hilux drums but it is very, very tight....)

Thank you everyone for your time, shaun, this is very very helpful and confirms my thinking so far! I'm not planning on any extra power, so I may think more about the Essex axle. Cheers again guys!
