Progress is slow, however still happening. The Frankenstein build continues... A bit more research has found the longer rods for the 2.2/2.3 are few on the ground and would blow out the budget. I know race cars always get out of hand, however this started as a paddock basher, and I'm still doing my best to make things work that are the most cost effective. That said, it makes more sense to turn the 2.0 into a na motor and turbo the 2.2. So the head from the long motor will go onto the 2.2 bottom end, and the calibra XE head will find its way onto the 2.0 (was the long motor) I have managed to find some factory xe na 2.0 rods, pistons and cams. (My current XE heads has turbo cams) Both factory rods and (Mahle) pisons are forged. Compression is 10.5:1. I am building an NA exhaust and dcoe inlet as purchase and freight from UK is not cost effective. Hopefully this should land me somewhere around the 170hp range with a reliable forged bottom end. The 2.2 will stay standard (ish) with a mild port job, inlectors and a steam pipe manifold. It will be a long term project for another MK2 I have.

Good progress there..
Can't you look for something close in the twin Weber intake and chop the mount and fit a made up xe one, or adapter plate it for options. I'm making a steam pipe turbo manifold for a Duratec, and my 2.6 Courier, just want better than what's available. Cheapest place for steam pipe I've found is Blackwoods , $4 a piece !

I looked at chopping up an old looking pinto one I had. The only problem is, I can't yet TIG! It's on my list of to-do's! My uni-mig even has tig capability. So for now, , whilst not ideal, the inlet manifold will be made from steel. Yep, steam pipe is cheap, and easy to work with. Shaun

Progress is still being made.
Some new parts have arrived. Some more are on the way. I've now officially blown the budget, and the scope of the project.
Yes, it would have all worked with standard parts however I've decided to get greedy.
Rods, pistons, cams, springs and retainers.
Will post some pics up later

I think the same mate, I've bought 2x duratec motors, 1 is 2.3 the other 2.5, both are good but need a freshen up but I'm going to get new pistons for the 2.5 of higher compression from a late 2017+ cx7 etc skyactive thing. The 2.5 crank gets binned and also the rods. I've bought new 2.3 Eagle rods and will use the 2.3 crank in the 2.5... Confused? Good ! , What this creates is a 2.4 duratec with 2.5 torque and 2.3 revs.. Added to this the average 2.5 head is better than the best 2.0/2.3 heads in std form. I will add a real turbo from something similar, not a cheap eBay thing.. might look at the Focus st turbo. There's more behind the scenes of this but ain't going into detail here.. Will you be mixing engine components to make a hybrid monster too?

Yes. A hybrid engine too. I'm using the 2.0 head, with 2.2 block, 2.4 crank. I'll end up with a 2.3 and a bit engine. Not going all out, so will keep it under 7500ish rpm to keep it on hydraulics. Might change to solids later however the budget won't allow it at this stage. Always aiming for an engine with a good deal of torque and I think I'll achieve that. I'll have the left over standard c20xe forged rods and pistons which I'll put in the 2.0 for a turbo build. Yep. Confused as well....
Let me know if you have any spare 2.3 pistons? I have something I'd like to try.
Thanks. Shaun

More parts have arrived.... As time and budget allow. I now have some new lifters, tarmac/rally cams, double valve springs and ti retainers. Unfortunately I got send the wrong bearings, (incorrectly listed) so still need to get them and a full set of gaskets. Going to fab up some adapters to use the GSXR TB's to fit the DCOE manifold. (may upgrade later??) The last thing I might invest in is a lightened flywheel, as the standard is soooooo heavy. Head porter is busy until mid next year to it's still a way off, however some progress is still progress. Shaun

Nice to see some progress there Shaun,
If the Vauxhall xe( family) was in the USA, they will have ally flywheel ready to go. I bought 1 for my duratec and weight is about 4kgs . I'll be buying a set of Chev 2.4 Ecotec Pistons for my 2.3 duratec as they are flat top instead of very dished, it's either these or CX-9 skyactiv pistons which might raise compression above 13;1 , not great for turbo lol . Either way I go your welcome to the old pistons ..

Suprisingly, there is some support out of the US, just not allot. I actually got the springs, retainers etc from there.
As I have a mix match of GM parts, it is a little restrictive as to what I can get. For example, the crank I'm using is a 6 bolt type, similar to the later astra stuff here (actually x20xev engine, where as the earlier C20XE engine is 8 bolt)
Flywheel is around 4.5kgs depending on alloy or steel. Less than half that of the original which was designed for a ute application.
Pistons would be great. Between the spare blocks, rods and cranks, I have something in mind. Happy to pay all postage etc....etc.

So, in a little change from the wagon.... time for a thread revival. Thought I'd drag this old girl out and head away for the weekend. The XE stroker still needs assembly. However in the mean time, a while back, I got sick of this thing sitting around with no engine. So, rather than actually finishing the XE, as I happened to be practically given an old v6 with T5, I slotted this in to have some fun with. What should've been a quick conversion, turned out to be a lot of work, however, hopefully it'll inspire me to get out to some more events. I ended up building a bit if an oddball, and the S1 engine turned out to be a bit of a curse, as a s2 wouldve made things a little easier. Anyway, what I ended up with was rebuilt VN S1 block, reversed S1 inlet, S2 self ported heads with pcv valves blocked, custom rear sump and pickup, home-made extractors to 2.5" exhaust, revised heater/coolant lines, power steer8ng delete, moved coil and alternator and made a custom belt tensioner.. Has T5 with HD clutch, cut down falcon tailshaft to escort diff. Car has always been a bitsa, using what was at hand. This is no different 🤔 🤣🤣🤣 Will post some photos after the weekend if all goes well. Then, it's well and truly back to the wagon!!!

Shaun I noticed in the old photo from 21 the intake on that Zetec, is that a Ford racing manifold? I thought they were super rare and almost impossible to get in Aus?

Can't believe your still using the factory gantry brake arrangement. Upgrade it to a KA/KB laser master on the firewall, add some space there . V6 looks at home tho of I do say at least you can be proud to say Buick not GM for the motor this time !

If you are looking at the crate engine picture with manifld its not a zetec but GM based. Shaun
