Shifter/gear change lever for RS2000

Hi Guys,
I’m looking for a shifter/gear lever for an RS2000 standard four speed gearbox. I have just had the gearbox rebuilt and discovered it had the wrong shifter, being too short and not locking out reverse gear.
If anyone has a shifter they could sell me it would be much appreciated.

Didn't think there was a different shifter for the 4 speed, is it in the correct way?

I'm not sure myself but I did have the gearbox rebuilt by a driveline specialist and he's sure the shifter I have is incorrect and won't lockout reverse gear. He seems to think the forks on the bottom of the shifter need to be longer.

The aus RS had a short throw shifter, but thats got to do with the fulcrum point not the selector fork.
Can't remember how the reverse lockout works, but got a gearbox in the shed I'll check out over the weekend and get back to you.

There's a 'saddle clip' in the gearbox that locks out reverse. They are made of plastic and eventually break, allowing reverse to be selected without depressing the lever. Replacing it may be all you need to solve that problem. You can pull them out from the shifter hole with a pair of needle nose pliers. Replacements are available on eBay (Au and UK) either out of:

    plastic (cheapest and stock):
    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/FORD-ESCORT-E-GEARBOX-RAIL-CLIP-SADDLE-PAIR-SET-OF-2-2PCS-2738/132497668879?epid=1748346018&hash=item1ed979fb0f%3Ag%3AtAMAAOSwnMRZ3%7EWR&_sacat=0&_nkw=escort+saddle+gearbox&_from=R40&rt=nc&_trksid=m570.l1313
Watch out for moulding flashing on these ones - compare photos and your existing clip before pushing the new one in,

and glass filled nylon (stronger than plastic, more expensive, but probably a better option).

I've seen metal ones too, but none presently listed on eBay that I can see.

You can buy short throw shifters brand new from the usual suspects too, e.g. motorsport-tools, eBay UK.

    Flighters on it there...
Went out for a look today, turns out my spare box is a type 3, theres a cast notch in that for the reverse lock.

    Thanks Flighter and Drew,
There was no saddle clip in my gearbox at all. I have now ordered the glass filled nylon saddle clip from the English supplier. Given that my gearbox does not have a clip I can look at to see how it fits, will it be obvious how it fits once I have the new clip ?

    Best regards,
    Paul

I can take a pic for you tomorrow, as I have a Type 9 out of a car at the moment with the gear lever removed. Goes in the same way in a 4 speed.

The top of the photo is the front of the gearbox. The saddle clip just presses onto a small shaft; no tools required; your fingers will be enough.

If nothing else, this photo shows that we forgot to seal up the gear lever hole before doing a lot of grinding. Should be fun cleaning that out now.

    Thanks Flighter,
I’ve had a look at my gearbox and also another one I have here and they both appear to have a plastic or nylon clip but it looks different to the one in your picture and also different to the ones I have ordered on eBay.
I have attached a picture of the 4 speed gearbox I have just had rebuilt and also one of my shifter. Please let me know what you think.

    Best Regards,
    Paul

I fitted clips like you ordered (although the plastic ones), for both 4 and 5 speed gear boxes, and they work fine. I suggest using some pliers to pull yours out, as perhaps a piece has broken off (I suspect so based on the look of the LHS), or it was put in the wrong way (although I don't know if that is even possible). A broken clip will permit you to select reverse without depressing the gear lever first; that's why I replaced mine.

    Hi Flighter,
I thought that may be the case. Mine definitely looks like the piece of the saddle clip on the left hand side is not there.
( although there is no sign of anything being broken). It shouldn't take too long and the clips that I've ordered should arrive and I'll let you know how I go.
Thanks once again for your help and also thankyou to Drew as well.

    Hi Guys,
Eventually got my rebuilt gearbox fitted and installed the fibre reinforced saddle clip, however I still seem to have something wrong. The first-second gate seems fine, across to third and fourth is really stiff and I don't need to depress the lever for reverse which is really close to first-second. Once into the third -fourth gate the lever is really stiff and reluctant to come back to the first-second gate but once it does, it's really easy to go straight through to reverse. I'm wondering if I have the plastic saddle installed incorrectly or maybe the shift lever is the wrong way round? Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
