air conditioning now mandatory for RWC
So it seems in the next bid to outlaw our cars, having air cond is now a roadworthy requirement, at least in Vic. As of start Aril, any vehicle needing a RWC must be fitted with AC, existing fan is not sufficient. First it was banning 13"rims, now this.. (Hey, it's tradition ;))

Hi Deano, I presume RWC refers to a roadworthy certificate? Does this air con requirement cover all vehicles? EG if I had a 1926 Oldsmobile with two wheel cable brakes, wooden wheels no indicators etc etc would I have to fit air con to get it licenced? Air con just wasn't available in most Australian cars until probably the 70's and I would think just couldn't be fitted to a lot of cars, although I saw a Mk1 Cortina with air con fitted in Thailand, but it had a 1400cc Nissan engine as well.

Hey Timmo, good questions, I'm not sure the answers though. Weird stuff seems to come up April 1st every year.

I heard the new a/c requirement is to improve safety by ensuring efficient demisting of windows. Seems reasonable to me!

Hmm, seems April 1st is cropping up in the thread a bit too regularly!! Below is an extract from Vic roads website, What is not inspectedThe roadworthiness test is not a check of the mechanical reliability or general condition of the vehicle. The certificate does not mean: - that the vehicle is in top condition without any wear or deterioration
- non-safety related accessories such as the air conditioner, rear window demister, electric windows and rear-window wipers are working
- that the items checked during the roadworthy inspection will continue to function after the inspection e.g. a brake light can stop functioning at any time after the inspection.
The roadworthiness test is not a complete assessment of a vehicle’s compliance with the Standards for Registration, which in most cases are the Australian Design Rules (ADRs). The ADRs are set a set of minimum standards for the construction of motor vehicles and trailers. Compliance with these standards cannot be assessed by inspection alone.

I’m preempting NSW following suit. Just sourced an air con NOS from a dealer that had an a/c left over. Charged the original price on the setup. £85.00. Can any one lend me an old pound or two.

Sweet what’s your conversion rate. Interest included. Fees and charges as well. This ac unit is now mandatory. (I’ll tell the misses that anyway).

Hey you blokes, got any Aussie made long weights tucked away in your shed? Demand dropped off in the 80s, and the local manufacturer eventually went bust, but I much prefer them to the cheap Chinese versions. No crappy ones please; I'd prefer new old stock.

Thanks Deano. I could use some tuits myself, but only if they are genuine triple chrome plated, as I got a nasty cut on my pinky finger once from plating that lifted on an inferior one I was using. I was young and naive, and tried to twist it by hand, and that little shard of plating slid in under the finger nail as I did so. Damn it hurt, and to make matters worse, I got blood on the brand new canuter I was installing, which was really difficult to polish up again due to the iron in my blood reacting with the metal. It was a pretty stupid move on my part to try to hurry the installation like that, as being round, you can't get a good grip on the tuit without using the right adapter anyway. I hope the eBay seller has them in metric and imperial sizes, as I can't remember whether I need 1/2" or 13mm, and figure I'll get some of each to be sure.

"Sweet what’s your conversion rate. Interest included. Fees and charges as well. This ac unit is now mandatory. (I’ll tell the misses that anyway)." No charges mate. Happy as loaner. Extra looooong loan period. Then there is no reason to tell the misses anything.
