My Capri Perana.
This is my Perana build number BG196. It’s a well known car in South Africa. It has just a few minor differences from our Australian cars but my most favored is it has the dash km/h in Kms not miles. Still sorting out issues with it. Hope you like it as much as I do.

Awesome car Wiggy. Manual of auto? I remember a Perana giving some modern muscle a scare at the Targa West quite a few years back, been on my bucket list of cars to own ever since... Cheers Drew

Yes it was a 4cyl shell done as a conversion as many were. People could take their car into Basil Greens workshop to get the conversion done. All race cars were built on the same chassis 4 cyl and even acid dipped to take weight out. It’s the third car in the picture. Look closely and you can see the 302 boss on the bonnet. It’s manual top loader with disk brake rear end.

This has been scrutinized ten fold. In South Africa before it came here and bought from a reputable Capri importer. Then lots of study and forum work one day stumbled on this. Just someone saying this is your Capri and your posts when it was here. Finally I had to get it passed through NSW RMS. That took 3 months and not only blue slips after it’s club rego in Melbourne but full inspection from them. Took a month for them to Ok it and went for rego and they knocked it back. Seemed that a trailer in Australia was registered with the same chassis number. So I was told I would need a new number and new stamp under the bonnet. Let’s just say it was registered that day and the lady behind the counter doesn’t spend that long with one customer very often. It’s got its tags mods and stamps. It is a 4cyl shell showing how strong the car really is.

Absolute rip snorter Keith......... How far did the Builder go to reinforce in the chassis/body to cope with all that power ?

Bernie. It was built by Perana. The only strengthening is the corner fillets in the back of engine bay. The front radiator supports are different including at the bottom which is changed to fit the larger radiator and stop it needing to go through the front valance. Also the crossmember is larger and built in reverse meaning steering rack and calipers are all reversed to how a normal Capri is built. The combo is only 9kg heavier than a V6 so it doesn’t need any extra strength proved by these cars still driving almost 50 years after being built. It’s lower (to low really) by 50mm.

Wow! What a testament of how well Ford's Engineers built these Capris: V8 into an unmodified body ! I was of the understanding all Capri V6 got the corner strengtheners in rear EB corners, which had to be added to yours of course, being a 4 cyl body. My Capri has been "strengthened" in the rear with very heavy multi leaf springs (4 or 5 leaves?) and I assume heavier front coils, as there's much less body roll than I've experienced from other Capris I've driven. I wonder if a T5 out of an XF Falcon 6 cyl can be fitted with a special BellHousing to suit an Essex V6 ? (if anyone might know as I have the full kit out of an XF?)

If I ever modify my Capri (which I'm loathing to do as it's one of the last all matching numbers"Eleven Specials" in original condition), a Hydraulic Clutch like yours Keith will be top of the List ! The Cable Clutch is the perfect example of built-in/planned obsolescence to sell heaps of Cables compared to a Master & Slave Hyd Kit every 20 years !

Spud has a complete post about mounting a T5 to his Essex which also makes it Hydraulic clutch. All the race Peranas were made from 4cyl shells to keep weight down. Even acid dipped to take out more weight. Mine was not a race spec car though. It is original and not a reshell which is well documented in South Africa. At 280 hp and 9 kg heavier it’s not necessary anything over that and I’d be wanting more strength.
