1970 Ford Capri 3000 GT Pre-Purchase Inspection

Hi, I am new to this forum.

I have a request if that is ok.

I am looking to purchase a Capri, and I am curious does anybody perform pre-purchase inspection on Capris, I know of guys who can inspect Falcon GT etc but I am after somebody who has a knowledge base on Mk1 Capri, in particular 3000 GT's.

The difficult part is that the car is located in Tasmania.

Thanks

    Hi Ron

There will be a few guys on the forum from Melbourne who might be able to help out, but a good series of photos would be a good starting point if no-one could inspect in person.

    Cheers

This check sheet is a good starting point Ron. It's not perfect, but it's a start!

It’s also worth checking some of the threads in the ‘Capri by the numbers’ section, including this one: http://www.classic-ford.org/cfp/tm.aspx?m=82846

This is a great checklist. Does one exist for 72 models?

Pretty sure that one is the same car that was owned by forum member 900dukess: http://www.classic-ford.org/cfp/Profile/2152/

I don't think it is. That car came from Melbourne and was restored to a very high level.
From reading the ad it look like it has a few issues with the paintwork.

Two different cars.  Mine is in Perth, not Tas so this car might be 900dukes old one.  I recall him posting that he sold his for a record price so I would expect a huge difference in asking price.  There is a thread about it in project section where he said previous owner was also a Ron from Tas.  He talks of a paint tidy up but didn't say if it went back to bare metal or not.  Perhaps pm him and ask what was done and who he sold it to.

You don't need a capri expert to check mechanicals and paint, any car guy can do that, but you do need someone knowledgeable to check that its a genuine V6.  There are a few basic body checks that will quickly confirm.  For any old car asking top dollar you need to find out if the original paint is under the new paint or not and the only way to know without sanding a section back is to ask previous owners.  If it is 900dukes old car he had it resprayed in 2015 so paint should still be perfect.

You can test if new paint is acrylic or 2 pack by rubbing with acrylic thinners.  If 2 pack nothing will happen, if acrylic paint will start coming off.

What would you guys say a "record price" is for a restored Capri?

John Roberts are you still going to sell your orange Capri when you finish it, if so do you have a price indication?

The ‘record price’ was supposedly the same as Torana XU1 money, but was never fully disclosed. For me, that’s way too much. The car looks very nice, and is apparently reasonably low milage and well looked after, and 900dukess spent a lot of time chasing original parts to get it to where it is now, but it’s not worth the money it supposedly sold for. I’ve never seen the car in person, but was interested in buying it a few years back when it was going for around $20-25k.
