Alternater/tachometer

Hi guys. 2 small issues I hope.
80 mk2 1600 p/van.
1. Alternater is burning cable that goes to battery. Wiring loom unmolested.

2. Connected tachometer to coil, no movement. Tried both - and +

Any help would be appreciated.

Did the alternator problem just appear through normal use or are you putting the car back together?

Does it happen while the car is stopped or only when the alternator is charging?

Have you got the cable connected to the correct terminals on the alternator and battery, I know it sounds stupid but worth checking as some alternators have a terminal on the back for an earth strap.

Are you getting power on the voltage "sense" wire from the Alt dash light at her alternator?

What amps and volts is the alternator putting out?

I would suspect you have an alternator issue such as an internal short of faulty internal regulator.

Make sure you are using heavy gauge wire- I fitted an aftermarket alternator ( 80amps ) and got the sparky to check it was heavy enough for the job. Also fitted an earth strap to it. On my setup the spade terminal connection goes to the dash and activates the ignition light on startup, the heavy wire goes from the post connection on the alternator to the battery.

It happens while the car is stopped and while running.

Check the wire is connected to the correct terminal, if that is OK the alternator has an internal short.
