MK2 Boot Lid Tension Rods

Hey guys,

Anyone with a mk2 escort mind taking me a couple of photos of the boot tension rods? Have put mine back in
but obviously not correctly as they arent holding the boot open. Maybe have put them in the wrong way around
or something. Couple of happy snaps would hopefully enlighten me....

Cheers

If you've added a boot spoiler it could be the problem, that's what happened to mine anyway.

    straight slideways! right?

Boot spoiler yes but it wasn't staying open before that went on. Obviously won't be helping but think there is something else playing a part.

How much tension have you got on them? There are 3 notches, so you might have to put on the top one maybe. be prepared for a tussle, it requires some muscle to move them up, the rods are spring steel and need some pressure. Will see if I can get some photos, got a new phone so don't know how it will go!

this is an old thread, and Lee I'm sure your sorted know.
But for anyone else in the future I've just retensioned my ones, there's a convenient whole in each hinge support, allowing you to insert a decent bar for leverage. Increasing the tension is done by levering each bar end to the outermost of the 3 notches (towards you), and if you wrap a thin rope around the tension rod end, after using the screwdriver/bar, its pretty do-able.

Nice pics peter m. They leave nothing to chance. I also like the original plastic clip altho on my capri the rods would still clatter against each other so i installed a short length of plumbing pipe lagging on one rod. That fixed the problem and now the plastic clip joins my growing collection of original parts.

Thanks Peter. It all becomes so clear. My rods are in the wrong way which is why they aren't doing much.
Will pull them out and re-install them. Appreciate that.

That's ok. :)  Easy reference with a low mileage car with a known history.

The trick to fitting them is to remove the boot lid and remove one of the hinges.
With the hinge that has been removed dummy fit to car so you are sure the hinge bracket studs are swiveled into the correct position before fitting the torsion rods (It is possible to incorrectly fit the hinge with the studs 180 degrees out).
Fit the torsion rods in a loose position and twist the second hinge to tension everything in up, then plonk the hinge bracket studs into place.

Always be careful of your fingers and face just in case something lets go and springs away at you.

I fit standard M8 nuts on the hinge bracket studs which screw on quickly and easily until everything is in place and completely safe, then remove one M8 nut at a time and replace with the factory crimped M8 nuts.

Might take a couple of attempts until all fits together.
