Escort MK2 Air condition

Hi,

I´m about to rebuild my european 1979 Ford Escort mk2. I´m planning on installing air condition in this car and I´ve read that australian Escort mk2 had Air condition as optional extra, so I contacted Ford Australia for information about spare parts but they couldn´t deliever these, which was what I guessed. Ford gave me pictures of how the air condition controller and ventilation outlets in the car looked though, So now I´m searching for the air condition controller and the ventilation outlets parts. The rest of the a/c-system will be other parts (duratec engine with a/c compressor, some other condensor etc). Is it possible to find these parts in Australia? Se attached image, I´m looking for the parts in red circles.

Best regards from Sweden,
Linus

    Greetings Linus,
Yes Air Conditioning was factory optioned in Australia, my Ghia had the option fitted and I still have the entire setup ready to reinstall. You could source the parts but they are very few and far between as it was not a common option, as you said the parts you need would only really need would be the controller and underdash vents/blower fan setup the rest would be far more efficient if updated using modern parts. The Ford service manual and owners manuals I have all show the air con system system in them aswell. I can scan some of the manuals and supply photos of my setup for reference if that would help you.

    Hi Linus,

Not sure if you intended to circle just the AC switches in the console but I would imagine you will need the whole console as it has the ash tray as well as the AC switches which is very different to the standard console.

It would be great if you could post some good images of the ventilation outlets, a/c controller (even though there´s another picture posted of the controller in this thread now)and also what is said in the manual the a/c system! Do you have any tips for where I could look for parts in Australia? I´ve tried rare spares but they couldn´t help me. Do you have a site in Australia that all wrecking yards are connected to? Or is it few parts for Escorts left at wrecking yards in general? I´m guessing that your parts not are for sale?

    Hi,

Thank you for posting a picture of the whole console! My intention were to highlight just the a/c switches because I probably will use custom console. I probably need to change the gearbox tunnel to fit new duratec engine+gearbox (not sure which one I will use yet). But if it´s possible I would really like to use the original console shown in your picture. I´m aiming for using MK2 parts in as many places as possible in my Escort when rebuilding it. Is it your console on the picture?

    Hi Linus,

Yes this is my console. I got this with a bunch of parts I picked up quite a few years ago. If you're interested in buying it let me know and I can email you some more photos.

Is it both a-c controller and console you are selling or only console?

The whole console as seen in the picture. I'm not planning on doing an AC set up in my RS's so I might as well move it on.

Are you after a complete facia or just the vents that are circled? If your only after the vents they are the same as TE (mark 4) Cortina. I have a facia if your after the whole lot... Also have an ashtray and the mounting trim for the console but no switches. The trim just screws onto any aus spec console...
    Cheers Drew...

I would like to buy the AC-control. What is the price for it? Can you email picture of the backside of the control and also closeup on the front of it? I´ve been thinking about the center console a little bit more and apart from the new gearbox tunnel I will install, which can change how the console fit, I will also use double-din stereo which makes it easier to build custom console instead.

    Hi,

Is the "facia" the whole unit I´ve circled in the attached image in this reply? In that case I would be interested. But I´m guessing the facia is built for right hand car? My car is left handed so if that´s the case it wont fit. Thanks for info about the vents, I´ve googled and as I understand, it is the australian Cortina mk4 that has the escort mk2 air condition vents? Do you have the vents or only the whole unit?

    Regards Linus

Ahh you crazy swede's driving lhd cars on the right side of the road... Just kidding
I'm thinking the australian unit is not for you, try vintage air or one of the US sights, they should be able to help with an underdash unit to suit...
    Good luck with it Drew...

You can make it to fit, I started of with bits and pieces that were original Escort parts but I was also missing the fascia panel etc, so I looked at photos and set off making one to suit, also using Cortina vents, as soon as I had finished I scored a factory panel, I surprised myself how close I was even the extra screw holes lined up. My air con guy setting it up said the ford under-dash unit was out of their catalogue and suggest I could of got a new unit. In the end it was what I wanted as I did not want to do away with my centre console unit and fitted the switch gear where the clock was meant to be.

Does this mean that an under dash unit is still available for sale from somewhere (and by that I don't mean Ford, but rather an aftermarket thing)?

Looks good JVC, moving the controller to the dash is a good idea too... Incidentally the clock and cigarette lighter is from a 70's Fairlane, Ford really raided the parts bin when they made this set up.
