V6 D PORT VALVE ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURE
Hi all, # thanks to Glenn and his 16 head Bolts, I now have the engine back in one piece, but to ensure correct Valve clearances, I am hoping SOMEONE OUT THERE has a chart describing CORRECT Valve Timing procedure for the D PORT V6 in my 1972 GTV6.... # ALSO, what's the quickest most effective way to get INTAKE MANIFOLD looking as good as possible other than a good kerosene wash and polish with a gentle rotary brush on end of drill ? ..........is mag wheel cleaner too corrosive for this job ? I weighed up the pros and cons of polishing an aluminium manifold, and decided that painting was the easiest way to achieve a uniform finish. I think Drewdog did some polishing, so maybe he can chime in with his experience.

Hey guys, you're on the right track there Beevee, a few different size and grade brushes will bring it up nicely. I used a polishing mop on my bench grinder then a mop on the drill for the tight spots. The mops are fairly cheap and save heaps of time, the more compound the better I found too... Agreed with Flighter though, painting is probably a more cost and time effective method... Cheers Drew

Bernie. Valve Clearances - Adjust (From the original Ford Australia 3000GT manual, yellow cover issued 2/70) To check valve clearances turn the crankshaft until the valves in the first column are fully open, when the valves shown in the second column may be checked and adjusted as required: Valves Open Valves to Adjust 1 and 6 10 Ex and 7 In 8 and 11 5 Ex and 4 In 2 and 3 9 In and 12 Ex 7 and 10 6 In and 1 Ex 4 and 5 11 In and 8 Ex 9 and 12 2 In and 3 Ex To adjust the valve clearance, turn the rocker arm retaining nut in either a clockwise or anti-clockwise direction until the correct clearance has been obtained. Rock the arm to ensure correct seating and recheck the clearance. Valve clearances are: V6 Inlet 0.010 in. (0.254 mm.), Exhaust 0.018 in. (0.457 mm.) for Hot engines. (The same clearance may be used as an initial setting during engine assembly.) In my Supplementary Workshop Manual for the '73 UK Capri (ALL 'D' Port heads) it states the same Inlet clearance above, but for the Exhaust it states 0.017 in. (0.34 mm.) which is marginally less. Away you go, Terry

Hi Terry, you should try soaking the manifolds in white vinegar it removes all rust leaving clean metal. 50/50 mix with water and it won't affect good metal. And at $1.00 for two liters it's cheaper than water.

Oh and vinegar only works on rusty metal not on alloy.

Thanks Guys...................all very helpful..............You should see the Valve Adjustment procedures in my Ford Factory book ! Total brain-melter; half the info was omitted!!!! ..... Little wonder it made no sense. Must have been the "first edition" ? dukess600 sent me a PM but try as I may, it refused to work. Here it is for all to see.( Thanks for asking how my Wild Plum GTV6 is coming along)..................................... Thanks dukess600 for asking !.......................Just this week I have finished Engine and Transmission Overhaul and installed, and back on the road.............purring like a Wild Beast on the "Trade Plate"!.........Body/Paint is still original. Next plan is to get her RWC so I can Club-Regio her thru my Car Club I'm a member of a club called Mornington Peninsula Historic Vehicle Club,(MPHVC) which meets in South Frankston every month and have outings every 4 to 7 days. Once the good weather occurs, I must visit your meeting at Tower Hotel in Hawthorn Road, if you welcome visitors. Kind regards Bernie

Thanks John as I agree with 0.013 and 0.022 clearances.........always better too loose than too tight and Thanks FoxyCapri for the Correct Table that was botched in my Ford GTV6 w/s manual
