Starter motor

Hi all

I am having starter issues. I have a mk2 with a pinto 4spd and my original Bosch starter died which when I bench tested the solenoid had gone. I struggled to find a solenoid to fit so I went with a new high torque starter motor upon which I installed has displayed the same symptoms as my old one. So I removed it and also bench tested it and again the solenoid is dead. Please keep in mind that all battery cables are new and earths are clean and as short as possible as is the battery new and is displaying 12.88 volts statically and 12v when the key is switched to start all it does is click. At this point I am now scratching my head and I'm not sure where to go from here. Am I that unlucky to have a dud new starter or am I doing something wrong!??
