Electric fuel pump problems

G'day all,
Having a few problems with an electric pump not pumping fuel. It tests ok on the bench. It's mounted as close to the tank and as low as I can get it, on the floor pan just past the spring hangers, if I remove the line to the regulator and put it lower than the pump it flows fuel, after that if I stick my thumb over the end and get it up to the regulator in a primed state it works, but only once.
What am I missing? Do I need a one way valve to keep prime? Is the pump dodgey? Should I go back to the mechanical pump? and would that be ok with a pair of idf's?

    Has this pump worked in this car before?  What type/brand is it?  If it is a new setup......Sounds to me like it is not the right pump type to work as a lift pump i.e. it is not capable of self priming.  It either needs to be below the level of the fuel (to gravity prime) or you need to get a different type of pump.
     
    Also, just ensure there are no air leaks between the tank and pump inlet...

    As per mk1 oz, sounds like it's not self priming. Guessing it's a mk2 with a drop tank.

    mk2 2dr club car. pinto, stage 1 valves, rl31 cam, gsxr 600 tb running  MS2 extra. :-)))

    Drew,
    if you go back to the mechanical pump it will work fine with your carbs. Ran my twin 45's no prob, until the diaphram died of course and used electric one to keep me going.

    Ok cheers guys, it was a generic pump I got a few years more for the low pressure output, didn't factor in the self priming issue... it's a mk2 drop tank, correct, no way of gravity feeding with the sender the way it is... Slipped in a mechanical pump this arvo, got pressure and holding it now too. The engine even briefly spluttered to life It wasn't the proper start up I wanted before christmas but it was a start all the same, stoked...
