What are the best tyres?!?

Hello.

I have a Mk1 escort and was wondering which are the best tyres to put on my car. I have decided to but 6x13 on the front and 7x13 on the back and I am needing help.

Thank you

Just a heads up, i hve just put tyres on my mk1, check check and re check clearances, i have 13x6 superlites and 205/60/13s will not clear my guards i found out after i already bought them, have now gone back to a 185 tyre with no dramas, the tyres i did get are nangkang xr611 and for me they are perfect, plenty of grip wet and dry good luck

I have heard so many people say their wheels don't fit but I had 13x6 superlites with 205/60R13 tires and they cleared my MK1 guards. Had a slight scrape on the inside against the body on full lock but wasn't anything worth worrying about. Why is it some people have them fit when others can't?

    Its all in the offset....

With rolled lips you shouldn't have any drama whatsoever.

Mine wher rubbing right up in the rear guards probably 50 mm past the lip, only archs or flares would have cleared them and the fronts wher pretty standard rubb marks around the lip

My 13x7" with 185/60R13 tyres have been doing a bit of rubbing up high in the inner arch.

Might have to take to them with the big hammer to get some more clearance. But the actual arch has been rolled and clears ok.

    Would 175/70R13's fit 6x13's and 7x13's then?

    Thanks

As Shaun said, rim offset is the key!!!!!!!  A 185 might not fit if the rim had an excessive positive offset!!

    A few pics,

Here is a 13x7 rim, 205/60 R13 tyre. Yes its on the wrong side but gives you an indication of width on standard guards. I ran this combination for many years on rolled lips and the front of the front guards relieved (for reversing) for years without much hassle.

I'm currently running a 17x8.5 rim with 205/40 r17 on approx 2.5 inch decambered leafs with watts linkage to eliminate diff walk.

I've since mini tubbed the rear but only to make use of the 8.5 rims with some larger rubber.

You guys that are struggling with 185's and 13's are either running your cars very, very low, have a rear end that walks around on old bushes, or need a different offset.....

Then again, given the build qualities of our old fords, maybe I just got lucky!!

Are they rubbing on one side or both?

    Exactly what he said! ^^^^^^^^

Shaun have you got a couple of more side on pics of where the axle sits in relation to the bottom of the sill with your 2.5" leafs (i just can't see it exactly from those pics). Just about to order some rear springs and want to know the ride height whether i go 2", 2.5" or even 3" to go with my 195/15/50's.

    Cheers

Yeah rubbed both sides, in the same spot, i think it was due to incorrect offset for those tyres and a little too low, all bushes and struts are new just basic stuff but new, all sweet now tho went back to the 185 tyre no clearance problems anywher, cheers

I've been researching the 13x6's lately. I hope this helps

    Superlights-
    23P will fit a MK1 with 205 tyres
    13P will fit a MK2 with 205 tyres
    13P will fit a MK1 with 185 tyres

    JBW RS4's

    30P will fit a MK1 with 205 tyres
    16P will fit a MK2 with 205 tyres
    16P will fit a MK1 with 185 tyres

I was keen on some RS4's with the 16P offset thinking they would have more dish than the 30P. But the dish is the same. All the manufacturer does is put more meat on the back of the rim :(

195/50 15's on 6x15 Superlights with Kings reverse eye springs. Not sure if they are 2.5 or 3' lower than std? Guards std.
