How do I fix this?

This lovely surprise was left by a previous owner.
Is it able to be fixed without removing the gearbox?
Unfortunately I will need someone else to carry out the repair, any suggestions?

should be able to affix something over the top without removing gearbox. perhaps rivet or screw a fabricated box over it rather than weld

Another alternative would be to fit a rubber gearshift boot over it and screw or pop rivet it in place. Are you going to put a console in place at some time? If not then some of the late model focus gearshift boots are fairly big and may cover it.

Did it come with the celica / supra gear box?  The irony is that the tunnel didn't need cutting judging by the extension housing.

Matt, the car came fitted with a Toyota W50 gearbox that I have had rebuilt.
The tunnel has been replaced with one like this

The installation/welding of the tunnel looks quite neat so its surprising such a poor job was done cutting the hole.
I have a boot that covers the hole nicely and plan to re-carpet the car so aesthetically its not an issue, it just bugs me because the rest of the car is so nice.

Maybe cut a piece of ally out neatly and rivet it,
