Greetings from a newbie.
Hi guys. Have flicked through this forum a bit so thought it was probably time I posted. Im a member of other Holden forums as I have a HZ sandman, and LX SLR Torana and a VH commodore. But I have recently ventured to the dark side (hee hee) and got myself a Ford capri. Its a real beauty and very very original!! In fact a lot of you might find it interesting as a reference car, as apart from having the broken windscreen removed, its pretty much untouched. It has only had 2 owners and has full documentation of all servicing and everything that was done to it. I bought it after it was dragged out of a shed where it has lay dormant for the last 17 years. The owner 'was going to restore it' but luckily decided to move it on (to me!) before it got too far gone, as is the fate of so many great old cars. Anyway, Im at work so don't have all the compliance plate details on me, but I can tell you that its a 1970 car. GT V6 3000, auto, and originally Peppermint green. It was sold new through the Sydney dealer Peter warren, that I saw mentioned in another post, apparently started the super roo thing. The first owner was apparently the wife of the ford dealer there (hence the auto perhaps) and was called Mrs J Harrison of darling Point. Funny none of the paperwork anywhere mentions her actual name.. The 70s hey? The next owner was a school teacher caller Gray Merryman. It now resides with me, the Mrs, a dog, 2 cats, two kids, a Subaru, another rusty capri, and 4 holdens, in Ballarat. Plans were to restore it, then I have thought about putting a coat of clear on it and preserving it as a survivor. However im not sure about that anymore as I think without a full body resto the rust might take hold. At the moment its not too bad, and mostly surface apart from a few small spots in the usual areas. (Though I haven't pulled the carpet up yet...) I have a very rusty 1600 deluxe too, which I will use as a donor for any spare bits I need hopefully. It came with the original matching numbers engine but it has a different V6 in it which was put in many years ago. Not sure why. I probably wont get stuck into it too much for the next year or so as Im still working on my Torana, so I will leave it in its survivor state for the time being and might even trailer it along to the small ford show in Feb at Williamstown if that's on again. Then everyone can see an unusually well preserved original GT. (Well, preserved apart from the falling apart bits...) Anyway, enough of my yakkin. I know you want pics, so here ya go. if anyone wants photos of anything in particular, then let me know and ill post some up. Cheers.

Do you have any close up photos or can you take one of the strut mount, looks like the aluminium versions.

Don't sell the mirrors to Beevee.. he simply wants to flip them for a profit.. they are worth big money to the right buyer (300 - 1500 pending condition etc). I recall this car being advertised for a while, at a really good price! certainly looks like a good base to begin with.

Hainzy, let me explain the coding for your Capri. 706936 = This is the Single Item Dealer Order (SIDO) number 13118 = Ford (1), Capri (3), 1971 (1), 2-door (1), 3000GT Sedan (8) P Y S S 3 S2 P=3000 2V engine, Y=3-speed Auto floor shift, S=3.222:1 Rear Axle, S=Standard Front Axle, 3=Peppermint (Metallic) Paint, S2=Light Saddle Vinyl Trim with Cloth Inserts Capri Sed CK17LK94318C C=Ford Britain affiliate (Australia), K=Homebush (assembly plant in Sydney), 17=Capri GT Sedan, L=1971(year), K=February(month), 94318C=Engine number 2/71 4 Month&Year built and the 4=Seating capacity. Now, many cars back in the 70s, 80s and 90s had engine swaps via Repco and other engine rebuilders as it was easier to swap in a rebuilt engine and then 'do up' the old one and put that one in the next car needing an engine. You're dead lucky to have the original block at least to match the numbers of the chassis. I note that it has front and rear bumper over-riders, long range driving lights, the sports (aluminium) steering wheel, long range radio and the colour keyed exterior racing mirror (passengers side), all these items were optional extra's!! I'm a little confused though by the UK style rear seat with the centre arm rest, this was not a standard fit for the Australian assembled Capri's! In February 1971 there were 23 V6/GT auto's built and 68 manuals and for the year, 1971, there were 225 V6/GT auto's and 495 manuals. Total production of the V6/GT was 555 auto versions and 2459 manuals, a grand total of just 3,014 V6/GT Capri's here in Australia. The new car price for your Capri back in 1971 was $3694 plus all the optional extra's. You certainly do have a rare piece of Australian motoring history there!! Cheers, Terry

Wow thanks guys. Thanks for the comments and code info! And the warm welcome. Yeah it is certainly a time warp. Im not concerned that it wont be worth what the toranas are. I just like to save beauties like this as there's been too many cars of all makes, put out to pasture and left to rot. Im not fussed about the holden ford thing. Far as im concerned a cool car is a cool car. And with no more Aus manufacturing who cares anymore what brand it is. Classics are classics! I saw another thread on here about the price of the mirrors. Crazy! At this point I plan to hang onto them as this car is very original and id be loathe to change any of its characteristics. I was very happy with the purchase once I got it home and had a good look at it. It was on Ebay for sale by a bloke who had no ebay history. Zero feedback, and was in Newcastle! I bit the bullet and bought it at the last minute for 8k. he told me he got it about 18 years ago to restore and its been sitting in his shed for 17 years. he said he accidentally broke the windscreen by falling on it years ago, so took it out but never got around to replacing it. Then he wanted cash into his account and I started to get a bit worried! But plenty more phone calls and he seemed like a nice guy.. I have contacts with a guy who moves boats and caravans around so he backloaded the car and the extra engine and got it down here in Vic for me for 400. But once I had a god look at it and saw how original it really was I was wrapped. Yep I can take photos of the strut tower. Happy to post pics of anything anyone is interested in as theres a good chance its all original. The second owner Gray Merryman, was a school teacher who was apparently very fussy about his car. I made contact on another forum with one of his ex students who told me they got to go for a drive in it in year 12 and it was pretty quick. Apparently he took the badges off the car as he was too worried about them being stolen n the carpark by students. Which explains why they were in boxes. He also didn't want to change the car in any way, so bought an escort to modify instead. It does have some good options on it. Perhaps that's because the first owner was the wife of a ford dealer? Perhaps he was able to order the back seat? I can post pics of all the service history if anyones interested. Its pretty cool. The interior is pretty good. It will need the seats retrimmed, but the headlining and the doors are good. Door trims will need new backs at least. Unfortunately the blue car is too rusty to save. Ill post some pics up and youll see what I mean... Thanks for the link to the parcel shelf. Ill check it out.

BeeVee, those mirrors are not for your car, yours was fitted with XY-XC units. Not sure the early items will hit those dizzy heights again (MK2 cortinas had them too....) Great find Hainsey, that colour is getting rare now. Interesting the car has cloth inserts, they would have been the very gaudy orange check type pattern, very hard to find now. Keep updating with your progress and always seek advice before buying things your not quite sure of (I have lost count of the amount of people who end up with cologne V6 parts thinging they were the same as Essex V6 etc etc) Cheers JR
Capri The car I always promised myself

Thanks JR I think you meant to say XA-XC as XY never had these XA-XC mirrors. May have a chance to buy a 1970 GTV6, and so shopping around getting what I can when it presents itself. kind regards BV
