Coilover spring lengths
I currently have helper springs on my 2L struts with 2.25" dia coilover setup. Today one of the plastic separators shattered, so I had to pull the helper out of that side. Then I tried to get thinking on how to keep the same ride height, but loose the helper springs. Do I go longer springs, shorter springs and move the platforms up, keep the current springs and just move the platforms up? It must be Friday afternoon though, cause I just managed to confuse myself The car sits like this atm. This is where the platforms are set at the moment. The springs are 2.25" dia, 10.5" long and 190lb. The helpers aren't quite fully extended when the wheel is jacked off the ground. I think the helpers were 2" long ones. This was the helper spring that was in there (and the offending exploding black plastic spacer) Anyone have any ideas? Thanks

Can you just wind up the adjuster and have no helper? Cheers PJ

You can match the ride height by the adjuster, the downside is the spring may be a bit loose at full droop

Mate i have some 12" springs there i don't think I'm going to use them as ill probably use 10.5". They are 225lb. Never used. We need to catch up to discuss making up the sway bar as well.

Hey PJ, I'll give that a try. Not sure whether that will make it sit a little higher or not though. With the helper springs out it sits how I want it, but like you said rallyrs, the spring flops about when you jack it up. evobda, the swaybar is still on the list for sure. Are you in a hurry for it yet? I've got a hillclimb on this weekend, and then the car will be out of action for a bit while I swap the back end over, so I should take the bar off then. If you PM me a number I can give you a call next week to discuss. It would be interesting to see how the 12" springs go too.

Don't worry no hurry for the bar really. Im still toying with cross members to clear the sump so might not work out anyway if i go down that route..? But we can see if these springs suit or not?

the helper spring is there so your spring doesnt drop out at full droop as was said previously. if you use a longer spring you will gain ride height by the extra length of the spring or you will end up with the spring droping out as it does now. you could wind up the adjuster on the current spring by the length of the compressed helper spring, if that makes sense?? so you can match the heights at the front, you still will probably get the spring dropout at full droop though. or. you can keep the same ride height by pulling the helper out of the other side and just live with the spring droping out. or get a shorter insert.

It could have been the inside lip of the plastic spacer was longer than the compressed height of the 2" helper that caused your failure. The ones i use in the rear had this problem.

Was that on the rally car Matty? I'll have to get over and have a look at yours. And Gdub, its just got a xflow in it. It does lean a bit in the corners, but seems to handle the bumps ok.

What size sway bar? A heavier bar will compensate for the lack of spring rate. I have 10.5" long 250lb springs in mine with a Pinto and a 22mm KMAC bar. I have a pair of spring keepers but have never fitted them. Yes the springs hang free when it is jacked up but who cares, they slot straight back into position when it goes back on the ground. Are you concerned about it lifting a wheel when cornering? This is not really an issue either as the opposite side of the car will be fully loaded when this happens so the side that is off the ground wont be anywhere near full extension due to the load on the sway bar.

Yours looks to be sitting nice there Gdub. I have a 20mm bar on there at the moment, connected via drop links cause I'm running comp struts. The only thing I was worried about was them falling out and not seating properly again if you hit a bit bump or bounced over a kerb or something. But your point about the bar keeping the compression on the strut makes sense too. I'm about to put some stiffer rear springs in (currently the rear is saggy original springs with shot bushes), so figure I'll need to uprate the front ones as well to get some balance back. Would that be right?
