ALL MEMBERS CALLED 2 VOTE AS 2 LEAVE PAINT A) "AS IS" OR B) COMPLETE RESTO OR C) PATCH UP
Hi Guys, I'm in a dilemma re my GTV6 Delete D Port 1972 Wild Plum CK17ME in regards to PAINT JOB. It's showing severe aging at Guards in the area where you'd expect to see an aerial, and has spots of rust behind rear wheels and on guards in usual places, all of which can be treated to stop it spreading. ...... I have the engine and gearbox out at the moment, for all new gaskets,Seals and new Head Valves, and intend removing whole front end for "clean-up" and inspection of all components as well as maintenance on them and where they meet the chassis................. Please vote..... A) LEAVE "AS IS" with preventative treatment to present minor rust, and so preserve originality albeit paint touched-up over 10-15 years ago. B) Do a Complete Resto which means TOTAL Strip and Rotisserie with Bare Metal Respray, which in my case means years off the road. C) PATCH-UP meaning as A) plus Air-Brush thin paintwork which will probably increase already varying paint shades. Many thanks everyone, Bernie

Leave it as it is.So A. Give it a quick coat of clear to save it.

Hi, I tend to agree with smallvan, a coat of satin clear to hold it. Patching it will stand out. Use it for a while with the clear and if your not happy your up for a full resto.

If it was me, I'd go 'B'.
I wouldn't class that paint as 'survivor' because the original paint has been sprayed over (touched up/changed) at some point. You're not really preserving anything original.
Plus, with the rust starting it's better to get on top of it early.
Cheers Jamie

If you can afford it, I go "B", you will add value to it, and as Jamie stated above get to it early. John

I too am a 'B' man. but understand your dilemma. I think a full exterior restoration is the go. Repair rust dents etc from the colored parts and respray, this will protect the all important parts that will be harder to replace in the future. This will give many years of joy and last until you sell or can commit to the full restoration. Cheers. JP

Ultimately the question is whether you have the time etc to pump into a full high quality resto. I'm doing one now and its a huge undertaking. If you want to drive the car in the near future I would go with option C if I had a painter I trusted to blend the repairs in.

:) Yes, I'm sure there are a few of us who would consider buying it (I might get thrown out of the house though).

I have to agree with B, it deserves the best treatment. But ultimately it come down to what you can live with and afford, in both time and money terms.

I vote B. ie resto back to original as possible. Why?? Because the rest of us are going through all the pain and suffering of our detailed restos. Why should Bernie escape the pain?

I saw an untouched, original 289 Shelby Cobra once that was ridiculously cool because it looked like the survivor it was rather than yet another in a long line of pampered trailer queens. Lots of full-on restos out there (comparatively speaking), so you could be a little different and keep it really original (meaning option A or C).

I agree here. My 1970 MK1 escort had the paint redone about 25 years ago and is not the original colour, but it's still got all original chrome trim, side strips, steel wheels, vinyl roof etc and because of this it gets a lot of attention. The most important thing to me is being able to drive it
