Purchasing questions.

I'm going to enquiry to a young lady who told me that she might sell her first car.
All I know is its a Mk2 2 door.
What should I be looking for to determine its not a dog and a fair price for both of us?
A vehicle valuation site suggested 2k to 3k.
All help appreciated.
