Escort Paint Code Help Needed
Hey guys I have a Red (ORIGINAL PAINT) MK2 Escort Coupe, build date 9/80. The paint code on the plate is L. In all my research I cannot find a code 'L' in any model except for the 76-77 MK2's and it's listed as mushroom blaze. To me this does not sound like a red (can't find a pic on the net of it either) and it's not the correct year of the vehicle. Can anyone offer an insight as to what colour 'L' refers to.? I have a rallypack coupe painted Red Flame and that code is 'H'. The 2 colours are clearly different. The flame red is a brighter blood red, the 80 coupe is a bit darker. Any help would be great

Might have been a special paint colour chosen when ordering the new car.
Try checking with an automotive paint supplier. They will have all the documentation on the colour you will need.

Unfortunately I was at the paint shop getting colour for another job and queried it with them. They only came up with mushroom blaze aswell. I will go to ford and try to get a history printout. Hopefully they can shed some light on it

Just from what ive read online you where still able to choose the colour even though it wasnt available? Like what you can do these days it just costs you more? Maybe wrong though

Yes that's possible, however I wonder why they would stamp the plate with a code that is non-existent in that year. Even if from an older model, mushroom blaze doesn't sound like a red (I believe). Unless 'L' stood for customer order. Who knows lol

Could it be mushroom beige like the xb colour? When you search that it comes up with a few escorts but when you search blaze nothin comes up

If you go here and scroll down to 76-77 colour codes it shows mushroom blaze. Found it on 2 different sites so couldn't be a typo. But your right I haven't found anything for blaze either

Think I'll have to stick to plan B and hope ford can help me out. I found a post on another forum of a mushroom escort but needed to sign up to view the pics. Just waiting on approval but I think it will be the sandy tan colour like the XB's

Be interesting to hear the history on your coupe if its a non existing colour in that year it could have bein a head order like what they did with the rs2000s with the silver and black (heads of ford got silver and black as a choice only 5 in each from memory) maybe so top knob wanted a beige escort haha

Well hopefully ford will answer that. Added a pic for reference (don't mind the roof it's all fixed now) damaged roof is 80 model with colour code query. 2nd is rallypack with red flame for comparison

When you went to the auto paint supplier and asked about the mushroom beige what colour did they say it was?
Don't forget in the '60's, '70's and early '80's the description of the colour was often no where near the actual colour itself.
Appears your car was painted in a non standard colour for that year, assuming compliance plates and chassis numbers are all matching and legitimate.

I actually didn't specifically ask about mushroom beige, I gave them the paint code 'L', make, model, year etc. Only colour they brought up around that year with code L was 76-77 mushroom beige.
All body numbers etc match 100% and plates haven't been modified by anyone. I've had plates off for paint purposes and the back show no signs of manipulation. I too believe it was a non standard colour now otherwise the code would be verified with codes/colours offered for that year.
More digging to do lol
