Also, I think I have another one of these radios in a box in the shed somewhere. I remember having 2 of them at one stage and I picked the better one for my car. I'd have to get down there and have a dig through some boxes to see if its still there.

I noticed the steering wheels appear different in the photos above. My Escorts are all 74 and have the same buttons and steering wheel as the early model interior as above.
If you do find that other radio would you be interested in selling it at all, I would defiantly be interested in it.

Its only the early car that is a little different (and the RS, it has the special RS wheel). It doesn't have the 'collapsible' part on the boss. The brown rim in the last pic is just a cover. I'll start rummaging through my boxes and see if I can find it. Will let you know if/when I do.

Thanks heaps everyone for your input, there have been so many things I have wondered about my Escorts which have been answered here. Didn't realise how hard it is to bring my Escorts back to original, but getting a much better idea on was is and isn't original.
Fingers crossed you can find that radio hak073, would make a perfect addition to my projects.

Just to confuse you even more, here's what the factory workshop manual has to say about installing the radio as a dealer option, look to see if you got any holes there? And here is what it looks like installed on an early kiwi van:

Thanks HighRevs, when I thought I had learnt exactly what was original you come out with this. I have seen radios in that location but never thought it was an actual original position. I have also seen a few radios which are mounted in the dash on the passengers side but I know that's defiantly not original. I will have a look to see if there is any evidence of a radio maybe being on the drivers side in my Escorts.

Again, I think that side mounted option was on the early mk1s. The later mk1s have the radio slung below the centre console on one of these brackets. I found this stuff in the shed while looking for the radio, but sorry, it hasn't turned up yet. It wasn't in the boxes I thought it might be in, but there is a couple more to look through. But I have these 2 bits if you need them.

I'm defiantly interested in those pieces mate, will discuss through PM. I'm hoping that radio is in your shed somewhere. Since this thread has expanded to original interiors in general can anyone tell me what the original MK1 ignition switch set up was? I currently have one which is the same as below. When the key is tuned the ignition is turned on but wont cranks the engine over. Under the steering column surround there is a button which will crank the engine over. How original is that? I have a few sets of steering column surrounds and they all have a hole on the bottom. Was that hole for a button originally?

If you're talking about the hole I think you're talking about it's to give you access to the right side bolt that holds the steering column onto that dash bracket. Insert a socket extension up there and it will go straight to that bolt. No clue about any button. I'm replacing my whole ignition from the molex connector to the barrel and my ignition looked nothing like what you got there. What year?

Ok, I wasn't sure due to hearing others have had a button there as well. Must just be a modification people do.
