Refurbished RS2000 Steering Wheels Soon Available!

Hi All,

Just a sneak peek of the refurbished Escort RS2000 steering wheels soon to be available.

Included are a few photos of a prototype refurbished steering wheel.

The old rubber has been removed, the metal frame has been lightly sandblasted back to bare metal, acid dipped, then painted in 2 pack etch primer and undercoat. Because the product is still being developed this steering wheel metal has not been painted in the satin black, so the metal appears off white.

The "soft feel" rubber is "as new" condition, it has the same softness, and the reticulated pattern is in new condition as from Ford. The rubber has been reliably copied from a near new steering wheel.

There are no mechanical changes to the steering wheels so they will still comply with vehicle design rule conditions.

Still working on the logistics and finer points so no set plans yet.
They will be offered strictly on an exchange basis.
That is: the customer sends us his old steering wheel and he will receive a refurbished one.
Alternatively the customer can have his steering wheel refurbished and returned, exact turnaround times will depend on production schedules.
Also the customer could option that he strip and paint his steering wheel and send it for re-rubbering only.
    Prices yet to be calculated.

So if we supply a fully painted wheel will the re-rubbering process damage it?

    Hey Peter,
Thanks for the rear valance rubbers... They fitted a treat....
I'd be keen on sending an exchange unit and getting a new wheel made....
I'm on to a good powdercoater here in Perth, would that be a good base for you to work with?....
    Cheers Drew............

I see your other goodies got mention in the Summer 2014 Classic Ford magazine Peter, although Burton's gets the credit.  I'll have an order for you soon too.

"So if we supply a fully painted wheel will the re-rubbering process damage it?"
The re-rubbering process will not damage the paint provided the paint is well cured (a few weeks old).
If you are going to repaint the steering wheel make sure the entire rim and the ends of the spokes are bare metal.
These areas will be painted with a special bonding agent that will help the rubber bond to the metal. I will make more specific details about this very soon before you go ahead with the painting.

"I'm on to a good powdercoater here in Perth, would that be a good base for you to work with?...."
Powder coating is fine as long as it is painted over bare metal and painted as described above.

    "although Burton's gets the credit."
I haven't seen the mention. It seems to always be the way.....someone does all the work, and takes all the risks, but someone else gets all the credit.

For your reading pleasure Peter.  It's a shame you don't get the credit you deserve.

Appears to be an advertisement which most probably was written and approved by Burton themselves.
In the true context of the wording it is misleading by stating Burton as the manufacturer. They are not.
Burton are one of several European resellers of the products.
The components are designed, tooled up and manufactured in Sydney Australia and shipped to Burton.

Burtons have just assured me that they did not choose the wording, they simply notified the magazine about the new products.
It appears it was the editor who wrote the article and may not have been fully aware.

Thank you to those who have spent the time to alert me and send emails.

Just what I needed to know, I need a new steering wheel as mine is falling apart.

Also, if I still have it, I may have a bare frame of a RS laying around somewhere that won't be used by me at any time.

Is this going to be a short production run, or a on demmand thing? Because my RS is sitting around doing nothing until sometime after Feb 2016 at the soonest, which is heavily dependent on work-visa's and related BS.

The completed steering wheels will be ready to ship when ordered. But on an exchange basis (ie you send in a rotten one and you will receive a refurbished one).
Customers who want their exact steering wheel refurbished will need to wait until the next production run.
I expect we will be making them for many years to come.

Happy to buy rotten steering wheels that are no longer needed or loved. Cash waiting.
